This has been on my mind for awhile. And since I managed to get a real job finally I can afford something like the PS3 but one question remains on my mind. When the PS3 was first launced I read news about ps2 backwards compitably wasn't working quite the way it should. Then later on if I recall properlly they mentioned something about removing the processor for ps2 emulation from the ps3 on future models. And its been months since I read news on the PS3. So I am curious is the ps3 kickass enough to get now and did they solve the problems with ps2 backwards compitablity? or they haven't bothered yet and I should go buy a PS2 slim till next year when the good games come out on the ps3.

Because my fatty isn't reading discs quite as well as it used to and its time to get a new machine to finish so I can complete the dozens of games I have on standby for the system that I am near completing or still haven't played yet.

I haven't expierenced any problem with backward compatibility with PS3, actually it's been quite superb ever since it had that 1.8 something patch. 1080i for my PS1 and 2 games are nice.

Keep your fatty if it works, until you decide if you want PS3 or not. I don't think getting PS2 is very wise at this point.

Have had no BC problems with my PS3 (60gb) - I will say on your other point you're correct. They are removing Hardware backward compatibility after the 60gb model which is no longer in production as of a couple weeks ago (that's why it's such a great price right now). From the 80gb model in August forward they will use software emulation for backward compatability instead - and let me tell you as a 360 owner as well, software is nowhere near as good as hardware. That is when you will see ALLOT of PS2 games that aren't compatible - so if you want a PS3 now is the right time to buy, that way you get hardware bakward compatability and at a better price!

No problems with backwardscompatibility at all. In fact I never owned a PS2 but I have been buying old games for my PS3. I just bought MGS3 Subsistence @ Circuit City for only $17 and it is great. The first time I have ever played a MGS game.

I have roughly 40 PS2 games and I've tested them all on my PS3. They all work perfectly and look even better then when I play them on my PS2.

Thanks guys. I think I will pick it up in a pay cheque or two nows :3 except I guess light gun controllers aren't compitable are they :/ if not I can always pick up a cheap ps2 later down the road when they start getting rare. Or I guess the last few question s remain how long do you think the older models will remain and is there some warrenty? because I don't want to be fuxed out of it if something ever happened >.o And do you guys think they will do anything major to the machine they haven't announced yet? because I got a little POed with the newer model of PSP when I just purcahsed mine a month and a half prior to the announcement xP

The only "backards" compatibility problems there were is back when PS3 was launched some games had worse graphics (More jaggies) and washed out color. They fixed this problem in the firmware ~1.5 update and with the firmware 1.8 they even added upscaling. That is what he is talking about for backwards compatibility.

All issues have been fixed, and right now is perfect to buy... About 5 of my friends did then with the $100 they saved from the lowered price, they bought a 200Gig SATA2 5400 RPM 2.5" hardrive to replace the 60 gig internal.

It's sony- who knows. But I honestly can't think of anything that they could announce that would make me say "it was worth the cutting out of the emulation chip". To me backwards compatibility is far more worthwhile then some fancy dandy thing they can strap on. As long as I got my internet controller and backwards compatibility- what more could I need?

And personally, Warranties are pointless. Manufacturers (sony) have a 1 year warrenty on most products. Stores then go and say we'll give you a warrenty for like 30% of your products price. Then if something did happen and you redeem it, the stores do crap and say your product isn't covered and you usually send it off to sony anyway (Manufacturer warranties are free). I honestly have only heard of one story at all about a playstation 3 truely malfunctioning and that was because it's bluetooth adapter inside stopped working so bye bye controllers.

Every other fault I've heard was from neglect or the owner being dimwitted (Dropping it, etc).

So if you think your not reckless... Just use the manufacturers warranty and don't bother with a store one if that's what your talking about.

wait you can replace the internal memory with a third party company?

And honestly who has ever used up all the memory built on the system or memory cards? the only times it ever happened was with the sega dreamcast and the ps2 since those cards just plain suck with games that can't compress save data better.

Good choice and IMO there should be some of the 60giggers with Hardware BC around through September - but that's a guess they are already getting scarcer and scarcer - so the sooner you buy the better. I don't think the 80gb unit will add anything special. SONY is looking at trying to make a profit at this point which they haven't done yet on this console. So while on the surface they are offering what appears to be "more" to the uneducated consumer by adding a larger hard drive - they are actually doing things internally to bring production costs down so they can make some money. So the chance of them all of a sudden throwing something in that brings production costs back up is HIGHLY unlikely - at least for now. I do think there may be a major revision with additional features, but probably not until around the holidays of 2008 - but that's just a guess.

Just get the 60gb unit and you can't go wrong. :)

Oh and ALL PS3's have a one year warranty from the date of purchase - regardless of which model or when you buy it. As long as it's new from a store - you get the warranty.

Well considering there's some screws on the left hand side and a panel that say "HDD", all you do is slide out the 2.5" (Laptop-sized) hard drive... GO to your local customizing computer store (or www.newegg.com) and buy a 2.5" hard drive. Put it in the mounting tray... But the screws in... then cover it with the panel.

BAM done. I can actually see 60 gigs being used up pretty quickly. I'ved used up 20 gigs in only games (I have an external 250 gig for all my movies/music) and that's across 5-6 games. Just imagine when it comes to the fall.

First off, I'd like to thank everyone who has posted anything in this thread. You all have helped me soo much. I about have my $500 and I'm about ready to buy a 60GB. My question is this, I have many MANY PS1 games. Namely, FF7,8,9. Will they work alright on the PS3? I'm not about to get rid of my PS1 or PS2, but I really hoped that they PS3 would be freakin awesome and be able to my just one console for every Playstation game I own. I'm a pretty cheap guy and I don't wanna have 2 HD, one for my PS2 and one for my PS2 ,so that's one reason I want a PS3. I've noticed that the PS3 updates have more PS1 and PS2 game compatiblitly, does that mean that as they come out with more updates, you'll be able to play more games? If you go into my profile you can see what games I'm talking about. Man, I have a bunch. I've run mostly out of room on my 8MB Memory Card, and that's another reason I want a PS3. Why are you doing this Sony? Dang. I have enough memory for my PS1 games, but Iwanna just have it on one systemso I don't have to mess with cards. Any help is appreciated. :D

This is off-topic for the Ps3 board. You could try in System Wars, where multiple consoles are routinely discussed in the same thread.
