Hello everybody,

I am a Playstation 3 owner and a somwhat newbie to when it comes to video games. I just completed Metal Gear Solid 4 and I was really blown away by how good the game was. I never owned a Playstation 2 or really played any of their games and was wondering if it was worth buying any old PS2 games. Do you think I would enjoy a game like metal gear solid 3 and resident evil 4 or has time passed those games by? Has my playstation 3 spoiled me from being able to play games that don't look as good or is the gameplay still the same? Sorry if this is a stupid question but I don't really want to spend money on a game that I wont like.

Does your PS3 play PS2 games? If so, for sure...there are tons of great PS2 games. If not, then you're in the same boat as me =(

I'd say yes, most definitely. 10 PS2 games that I would recommend would be: MGS3, Resident Evil 4, (you were right to mention those, they're both top notch) GTA: San Andreas, God of War 1+2, Okami, Persona 3 (can't speak for number 4 yet, it's not out in the UK) Ico, Shadow of The Colossus and Dark Chronicle.

Though perhaps with some insight into your favourite genres it'd be easier to recommend games.

What model is it? If it's a 60GB or 80GB model then it should play them. 40 GB PS3s will not.

also, i believe the newer 80gb's don't play PS2 games as well correct? I'm sure the model that came with MGS4 wasn't able to play PS2 games...but i guess someone else can confirm.

Luckily I have a 60 gb model so I should be able to play them. My favorite games for the Playstation 3 are Resistance 1 +2, Bioshock, MGS4, Call of Duty 4 +5, and Deadspace, so I guess my favorite genre would be action games or First Person Shooters. So if anybody can reccomend games in that genre that would be helpful. Is there a good place where I can find these games for cheap? I am going to try half.com.

If you have the 60gb or the MGS4 bundle 80gb then you can play PS2 games, but if you have the 40gb, the regular 80gb, or the 160gb, then you're out of luck and can't play PS2 games.

I know I missed out on a lot of PS2 games, and my PS2 is in storage at my moms house and I think I'm missing a wire or two, so I'm glad at least my 80gb has BC emulation. I know I can always grab a PS2 game I missed out on for like $5 bucks or something. It's just weak that Sony took out PS2 BC in the PS3.

I just checked U.S. Playstation website for backward compatability status's and they make you enter the title of the game to check. The 20 and 60 gb models will play metal gear solid 3 and so will the 80 gb model. I guess backward compatablilty is dependent on the game. Here is a link to the website if you want to check it out.

MGS 3 plays a lot differently from MGS4, and graphic will be difficult to adjust if you are use to PS3 graphics.

However, if you enjoyed MGS4 story then you must play previous MGS games.

Resident Evil was best in PS1 era, but considering how advanced the graphics are now, those might be difficult to play if graphics spoiled you.

Overall, it depends how much time you are willing to invest. If you can put your time in long enough to adjust to inferior graphics, then it shouldn't be a problem to enjoy older games.

I thought Metal Gear Solid 2 was better than 3 and the first MGS was better than the lot. If you have access to a Gamecube I highly recommend MGS Twin Snakes, remake of the 1st one. Resi Evil 4 was great and I loved Final Fantasy X.

ya play games like Jak and Daxter (my Favorite game ever) and kingdom hearts. Play God of War 1 and 2, Killzone 1, and others but don't waste your cash on buying a new ps2 if your ps3 cant play ps2 games but if you got the cash, definatly play some of the ps2's greatest hits.
