Does anyone who has ps3 think the cell engine has a direct impact on gameplay, and if so on what games?

In Oblivion, made a fire spell with a 70ft radius, went into the arch mages room, casted the spell, everything when FLYING EVRYWHERE and no slow down. if that counts for anything.

dumb question. i dont notice that stuff but i do think that it really does make a difference. just get a ps3 if your aiming that way. probably the # of enimeis on screen.the enimes are extremely smart. and i have ALOT more stuff going on at one time. Resistence:fall of man. Motorstorm. the number of stuff flying off all over the place is noticable.

In Resistance, there are some levels with over 30 npcs running around, alond with constant explosions, machine gun fire, and the rest, all with highly detailed graphics.  If that doesn't show off the power of the Cell, then i don't know what does.

i think folding at home shows the power of cell, but it isn't really a game.  i've seen details and multitasking ability in games that i feel wouldn't work on several other hardware setups.

i dont beleive all the hype of the cell cpu.

ive just got  ps3 and have only played resistence for my self and im not that too impressed with it but im sure games that are coming in the next months will be good but not becasue of what sony say the cell can do..rember they said simlar things about the emotion engine also and i dont think that added to games much either.

so too answer your question: a direct impact ........no.

Motorstorm has great lighting, physics, and ai which are probably handled by different SPEs. R:FoM probably uses a different SPE to handle AI (for all 30 some odd npcs), and another for particle effects. The developers of Heavenly sword said that the cell will break up tasks for different enemy npc ai, and probably another for textures, and yet another clothing hair (this was posted in an article i dunno where though). The creators of FEAR also talked about using the cell as did team ninja.

I hate to use this example, but look at that one good game on the other system Gears, it has max 4-5 enemies onscreen at any one time. Resistance has much more going on. That shows the multitasking abilities of the PS3. So yes cell means more stuff. Motorstorm is another great example of cell and it's use for physics. I was getting too the end of the race. I was neck and neck with 3 other cars coming up to the finish line. I hit the boost coming to the finish line and my car blew up, hurling my guy about 300mph thru the finish line and I won first place. How is that for physics :)

Oblivion on Cell (PS3) vs. Oblivion on 360 processor. The result: loading times are much faster, and less frequent. This is a result of the amazing technology stuffed into this amazing, 9-cored processing chip. You can waltz the country side on a horse with maybe one "Loading Area..." dialog. As with the 360, you will get much more of these. Enough, in my opinion, to hamper gameplay.

The Cell is very powerful, any chip with 9-freaking-cores is amazing. I don't care what's said about it.

I guess, but physics on half life 2 are better with source and all. i think R:FoM shows the cells power for now till MGS4 and upcoming games. cmon Kojima is a perfectionist right?

I doubt we will see very much gameplay that would not be possible on the Xenon also. I do believe we will see nice extras like volumetric smoke and liquids and improved graphics since I believe the Cell can be used to boost the somewhat inferior RSX. We will get more eye candy later in life, but I would be surprised if we ever came across a game that could not be run on the 360 in any way.

I see a lot of people giving the Cell credit for what the RSX is pushing. If the Cell is doing its job the overall experience will be so immersive that you won't even know its there.

When i play games like RFOM i open up my PS3 and i can see my cell working extra hard to make the game play better. sometimes it jumps up out of the console and i have to wrestle it to the ground to get it back into the box.Especially when im playing RFOM the spu's  act just like the chimera its crazy.

What is it with some of the these people that just refuse to give the PS3 hardware any credit. Is it so hard to believe that in the future will see PS3 games that just aren't possible on the 360. We might not see it for awhile, but I'm almost guaranteed that we will in the future.

yes, you can see already see the impact of cell in games like resistance, (insane amount of enemies on screen with next gen ai and physics); motorstorm (crazy amount of mud caking on your rig in real time with real time track deformation and hella parts flying everywhere); and F1 with the super cool looking rain effects which are being run through one of cell's spe's in real time where the rain reacts to the movement of the car.

In the near future, games like Heavenly Sword will show even more of what cell is 'bout http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/04/11/heavenly-sword-week-continues-the-tech-behind-the-sword/

All joking aside RFOM and motorstorm are the best examples of game play being enhanced. RFOM is a very busy game many of the single player campaigns have so much going on right on the screen it crazy. crapbox360 gears is practically dead compared to this game. maybe gears has prettier graphics but the surrounding, the immersion of the game is dull.

4 REAL

Since I had the PS3 I think its 1 damn smooth running machine.  I really cant compare it to any other system besides the PS2 but so far the games I have like Motor Storm, Resistance, Fightnight, Grand Turismo Hd, and some others demos and game trailers show a very powerful cell on my Samgsung 56in 1080p TV.

But I think the cell has the power to handle much more.  When game developers get grips on making full 1080p games and using the size of blu ray not only to fit content but other programs that handle graphics, speed  and other stuff.

I just want to see better online. Motorstorm, fightnight, CoD and some other games online and the servers that support them are not good for next gen.  And I have a powerfull connection, Fightnight is so bad online, hard to get games, dont know what to do, choppy online, and this seems like the same issues since 1. Oh well

Obvoiusly the cell has big impact on the games. Sony, ibm and toshiba didnt spend 400 million dollar to design the cell so in the end it will be matched up with current multicore processors.

gears is awesome and 360 is a very power system. although the ps3 is more powerfull, they both offer crazy fun games. thats why i own both. oh, and the wii is a nothing.

you have a point. on 360 that would slow down to a near stop, but right itself nonetheless. interesting...

Yup, in motorstorm the physics are the most realistic I've played in a racing game.  The destruction on the vehicles is the most detailed i've seen.  Also the AI is ruthless, they will run you right into a wall if you dont do it first.   Thats all Cel.

Does anyone who has ps3 think the cell engine has a direct impact on gameplay, and if so on what games?SacredShotgun

I will tell it like this. I own a xbox 360 and a ps3, and the year head start the xbox 360 advantage for devs to take advantage of the xbox 360 has shown great graphics so far, but nothing that I cant see the ps3 doing. I mean the ps3 for the short time that it has been out has amazed me with games like Motorstorm which I still have yet to see any physics so realistic in a racer game on the xbox 360. Just like the other poster before me said, with Resistance Fall Of Man, how many enemies and allies and objects with explosions happening on the screen with high detailed graphics going on at one time, compared to gears of war where there is only like 5 or 6 enemies on the screen at the most, and barely even anything going on as much as u see on resistance fall of man. U can clearly see that when a game is built from the ground up for the ps3 such as motorstorm and resistance fall of man and taking advantage of the hardware, that the ps3 is alot more impressive then the xbox 360, and that is the honest truth. I will admit that right now the xbox 360 has more games that I like to play on there but the ps3 for a console that just came out, it is showing me alot of things that I havent seen the xbox 360 do, besides the graphics which the xbox 360 holds for the time being, but I think that will change when devs start to tap into the ps3 and the first game I think that will show the ps3's graphics will be MGS4 and Gran Turismo 5. I think Lair and Heavenly Sword and other games will show off some other areas which take advantage of the cell processor which we will notice just like we have with RFOM and Motorstorm. I love both systems but the ps3 for the short time that it has been out, has shown me alot more then the xbox 360 and I believe it will only continue to surpass things as times go on vs the competition.

So the argument is having more enemies, explosions, etc., on screen, yet the comparisons always include Gears, and xbox game which happens to have no more than maybe 10-12 enemies on the screen at once.  Ok, true, but are people forgetting about how hectic Lost Planet and Dead Rising get?  What about Ninety-Nine Nights?  I'm not arguing over which system is better, but please, make better comparisons.

I think we should still wait a bit to see how the cell effects games.
Most of the PS3 games out yet are multiplat, and sure those games wont be shiny examples of what the cell is capable of.

Talking about how many enemies are on screen, again, I think we should wait for Heavenly Sword. The developers promised hundreds (not 'a hundred') of enemies at once on screen, all burning to slash you. Keep in mind that there'll still be highly detailed environments which you can see extending for miles.

I think this is gonna be one great exmaple of what the PS3 and the Cell can achieve.

but as time goes on we'll notice the difference more and more.........hopefully!

I believe you have never went to the B3D forums, where actual ninja theory Devs talked about the RSX

I believe that compared to the quality processor in the PS3 and the 360's GPU the the RSX is looking kinda stale. Considering the RSX is a nice 7800-7900 the RSX isn't as advanced as the 360's GPU which has the 10 megabyte daughter die for virtually free 4x antialiasing and the new Unified shader Architecture. The RSX is based on 2 year old technology. It's solid, but not flashy. Probably the thing that has me most excited about the Cell is that the SPEs have been compared to powerful, general purpose shader units, so once developers get familiar with PS3 hardware they can suplement the RSX with the Cell and blow the 360 out of the water.

No one could claim experiencing the cell's gameplay yet, simply because any games has really used it at full potential... ( same as 360 no games really use fully the 3 cores) We'll see later when devellopers will have more time to work on this new technology

Look at it this way, its good news because we are yet to see much better games one these two consoles when they manage to exploit them more...

But I'd rather say multicore gameplay, instead of just cell, cause so far, the PS3 definitely as to prove that it has more in the stomach than the 360 (with so many games with bad framerate, that's definitely a cpu issue that needs to be solved...)

No there hasnt been an impact strictly because developers do not know how to program on multiple core cpu's yet, you people have to understand that devs are using older style programming methods and are not taking advantage of the work that can be decraesed due to multiple cores loading different things simultaneously.  the only devs doing this right now are the creators of world of warcraft on PC, for the dual core.

The cell has had SOME effect on gameplay but not a massive amount. The best example would the hedgehog grenade. Every single spike that shoots out of that thing can kill you, normally with a standard core processor it would be far less that affects your actual character. Motorstorm is a beautiful game and the physics in that thing is unbelievable but I still don't think that the cell has much to do with it. The ps3 has only been out for 6 months, this machine technologically speaking is ahead of the pack by years and even ahead of something even us humans can even begin to compromise or utilize. 7 SPU's is a lot of SPUs, matter of fact that number is outrageous. However, because of such advanced technology developers are incapable of using the full potential of the PS3. Motorstorm to me is just a fraction of what the PS3 can do, a damn near fraction is all the motorstorm represents of all the power encased in that little black box and quite frankly I don't think developers will be able to utilize it anytime soon, but i'll say this, if motorstorm 2 becomes a drastic improvement over the first one both graphics wise and physics, AI. and all that crap, then no way in hell can motorstorm 2 even dream to run on a 360 machine. Think of it like this, motorstorm is a beautiful game that like I said is only so much of what the PS3 can do, and despite that it can compete with any game the 360 has to offer graphically speaking, people will bring up gears of war but I attribute it's graphical superiority to the unreal engine, and that that same game would be able to run on a ps3 if they were given that same engine. But the way developers are crying about all this stuff I don't think the true power of the PS3 will be showing up anytime soon, but if every developer pushed themselves like the guys at team ninja, or Kojima then maybe the PS3 can face it's true glory

Ok i was doutfull of getting a PS3 but after some convincing i did, what do you think im using to post a comment on? So right now im listening to music, with 4 web pages open..oh and one download (1 from PSN store one of the web) No jumpy'ness THats good! Also If you download the free motor storm demo press start during gameplay...you can look around! see the shiney'ness of the cars underbelly. beter still do the jump at the start then press start.lokk behind you. all the AI (15!) are racing and they are there not loading or buffering there re there! PS3 is amazing and im on a 15" SDTV! To date PS3 CAN do ANYTHING the 360 can do. In the future it will make the 360 look like a wii for hardware. also you can use six-axis on the motor storm demo! works a treat and personaly i prefer it to the wii.....POWER...PLAY...PS3 Resistance fall of man is 40 players!!! i dont think any other console has done that with equal qulaity as this. PSN: RoguexShadow

in resistance i was playing a 40 player breach online with unlimted ammo and it was crazy.  everyone was trying to take the final reactor and it was total chaos. at least 40 different grenades, 20 different laark missiles, augers going through walls, and rpgs all exploding and flying over your head at the same time without any lag at all. all taking place in the same tunnel. i couldnt believe how much was going on at the same time. the cell is a beast.

But I'd rather say multicore gameplay, instead of just cell, cause so far, the PS3 definitely as to prove that it has more in the stomach than the 360 (with so many games with bad framerate, that's definitely a cpu issue that needs to be solved...)

usule

No that is definitely not true, the framerate issue only occurs in the games that have been directly ported from the 360 counterparts and the developers are too lazy to optimize the game for the cell+rsx, it's not a cpu issue as you can see with the 1st party games for sony none of them have framerate problems, now if the games were developed strictly around the ps3 hardware there would never be any framerate problems, but a port will always be a port.

i dont beleive all the hype of the cell cpu.

ive just got  ps3 and have only played resistence for my self and im not that too impressed with it but im sure games that are coming in the next months will be good but not becasue of what sony say the cell can do..rember they said simlar things about the emotion engine also and i dont think that added to games much either.

so too answer your question: a direct impact ........no.

daveg1
I agree.  I've yet to see a game that couldn't have been released on another platform.

I notice the power of the Cell every time I turn on my PS3; I'm sure if it wasn't working correctly the thing would be giving me error messages or not working at all.  Seriously what is the point of this thread?  Of course none of us understand the power of the Cell; well unless some people here are developers?  The Cell and the tri-core PPC970 in the 360 are both amazing processors connected to amazing graphics solutions .. go this gen go!

[QUOTE="SacredShotgun"]Does anyone who has ps3 think the cell engine has a direct impact on gameplay, and if so on what games?squallff8_fan

Comparing RFOM to Gears is pointless because RFOM is a run n gun type of game and gears is not.I have not played COD3 but I remember COD2 having many enemies on screen at the same time and that was a launch title.

Although no one has played these games yet, I think the demos for Big Little Planet and Super Rub-a-dub showcase just what the Cell can do. With the physics involved in these games, I doubt either would be doable on any other console but the PS3.

Once I get my hands on Heavenly Sword, it'll be easier to tell. Apparently that game is using the Cell in a great way. Fantastic animations, tons of guys on screen, great A.I. etc. The developer stated they are using half of one of the SPE's just for the main characters hair. That's still 6 and a half SPE's left for everything else. That gives me a pretty decent idea of it's capabilities.
