I've heard the exact opposite. Additionally, the numbers are saying that Sony cannot afford a price cut (Due to them apparently taking much of the blow with free internet, adding blue ray which is more expensive in any other system (IE: PC), etc.)... Furthermore, people are just assuming the price cut as the PS2 price cut happened a year and a half after release. I cannot remember why it price cutted, but there was a competitive reason for it.

Sony already cut as much as they could as far as I can assume and have read. Speculation is that it won't atleast price cut until around Q2-Q3 2008 or even as late as Q1 2009.

bs sony is gonna price cut 50 dollars at the end of this year imho.  i say this because they NEED it.  they cant keep up with sales of 360 atm and even more so there own ps2.  the price is just too much for some people and its understandable.  when they get to the 65nm chips and removing emotion engines from all of them and they start churning a profit they will drop.

They're speculating it because Sony needs a price cut to remain competitive.

If they remove the 'emotion' chips, wouldn't that get rid of backwards compatibility? (I'm pretty sure someone said here earlier it wouldn't, but hey who knows).

$50 isn't that big of a drop though either... But I still say Sony is competitive... They're during short-term payment instead of 360s long-term with the online fees and such. But I guess it ends up to people to see that.

With out the emotion chip, Sony will have to emulate games to be backward capable. But it will save them more money in the long run. It'll be cheaper to run a software for emulation then put a hardware for it.

The higest priced player always feels price pressure. It couldn't have been easy for Sony to go to market at that price, and I would imagine they're doing everything they can to reduce the price. Everyone who thinks its a bargain at the price has one, so to get out of last place they have to start delivering. First it is games, second it is price. Those are the obstacles that must be overcome.

Well, as long as the backwards compatibility isn't as bad as the 360 (Which is a legit statement. Only about 50% (assumption) is backwards comptible.

Well, this fall I'll hopefully get my HD TV. Until then I won't bother with the PS3 because it'll be fun. But I couldn't appreciate the graphics. I'll just buy an HD monitor that can be compatible with my computer.

The real question is how much do they need to drop this Holiday season? If the xbox360 drops price and halo3 coming out at the same time what will happen.  GTAIV and MGS4 are going to be good but that price needs to drop, big time this fall. and that not a fanboyish thing to say, it just reality so please dont accuse me of that because im waiting for a price drop right now.

You don't have to be rich, but you need to be realistic about you expectations in the cycle of consoles.

honestly i dont see a real difference between 400 bucks and 600, unless you have to convince your parents to buy it if youre a young gun.  seriously with what you get for that 200 buck price difference is so nice though :).  Anyway, i doubt a price cut will happen because it probably because sony would lose a lot of money...and that probably isnt the main reason they're not flying off the shelves(it is in combo with the lack of exclusives, though).  Alas, I dont really care about a price drop because I already have one.

The thing is that everyone besides Nintendo is not making profit, but if going to make a prediction that a premium 360 by this fall will be $300.00 so im saying now just wait, this is the time where everyone is going to go for each others throats and prices will drop.

I just learned that I'm now a soon-to-be proud owner of a PS3 by the end of the month... Just gotta find one in stores and BAM.

Blitz is right though, apparently Sony is losing about $170 for each 20GB console sold, and about $270 for each 60 GB sold (US Dollars)

I think software sales this summer/fall are going to be particularly poor for the ps3. As a result, i think they are going to feel forced into reducing their console cost, either in november or january/feb.

Hmm, they are still losing money per unit sold, I don't know home much it is now, but I think it was like 850 to make a 60gig before launch.

I'm not sure whats going to go down, but a price cut isn't going to do much to help them, it'd need to be more significant, since the $500 is phased out, the price difference between its competitor has went from comparable to look at wallet and think for a moment.

sony NEEDS to drop the price. sure it would hurt them initially, but they would start selling systems and games fast and this would benefit them in the long run. also, they are already doing things to try and lower production cost like removing the emotion chip. this is a clear sign of a coming price drop.

I own all consoles, and the Playstation 3 is easily the best value,

Heres the way I see it-

Wii- You get what you pay for- not much, although is ish fun with friends. - $399

360- cost me $650 AUD then i was set back for an $80 fan cause the thing is a practical barbeque(and its neccessary for it to remain working), live sets me back a further $75+ each year(assuming I play for 5 years), Wi-fi set me back another $165 and then if i wanted to make it somewhat similar to PS3 with HD format it would set me back another $249 and yet it still doesn't compare to its competitors but coming in at a whopping - $1519

PS3- Loaded with everything i'll ever need for next generation gaming and best processor and graphics processing unit as well as blu-ray, bluetooth, free online, home, 50 gb game limits and more for a mere- $999

That's the way it is, xbox starts off cheap, yet i found out the hard way, that really just begs for money once you've bought it, and it honestly just isn't the same experience as wii and in the most drastic case PS3

That's what I've been trying to tell my friends. The online is where Microsoft gets people. By the time they phase out the 360... You would have paid more then enough to raise the launch price itself to that of the PS3.
