Free online. I dont know where you are, so I dont know what version you'll get. I forget, Sony stop puttin the Emotion Engine in north american systems yet? Anyway, even without EE, the PS3 has excellent backwards compatability. And, no, you do not need to pay for internet services. You may have to pay for downloadable content though, but thats decided by the developer, not Sony.

1st of all
Online is 100% FREE except if u buy games online ( then u have to pay for what u buy )

In North America / Japan -> PS3 is 99% compatilble with PS / PS2 games
In Europe / Australia / rest of the world -> PS3 is about 80%+ compatilble with PS / PS2 games

Living in Australia i have tested only a few good PS2 games such as Eyetoy, Singstar, God of War 2, Okami, Final Fantasy XII and KH2 - all worked perfectly ...

This is deipite Okami listed as having *noticable issues* and Kingdom Hearts 2 listed as not working at all ...
