Why do you want to trade for a 80 gig more storage space? Because I'm not positive but very few 80 gig are backwards compatible.
i want an 80 gig for more space, and t be able to play ps2 games...but the new ones cant? so can ne play ps2 games?
and the saved games i meant like game save files, e.g gta 4 saved file etc etc, can you move them or o you lose all your saved games?
The original 60 gig like i have can and some others look it up here http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=232&p_sid=iXpaOiFj
They say that Sony is about to start putting a new technology into their next PS3s which will allow them to play PS2 games, but it might not ever happen. It's supposingly a surefire cheap method disregarding any chips.
you can still get older versions of the ps3 with the graphics emulator but they are pricy. The models with the graphics emulator card were the 20, 60, and 80 gb models. The 20gb model had the second best backward compatibility, has 4 usb ports, supports SACD (super audio CD) and had no memory card slot and no built in WI-FI. The 60gb model has 100% backward compatibility with 4 usb ports along with WI-FI and SACD support and has memory card slots. The 80gb has the worst compatibility and supports everything the 60gb model does.
With the money you would loose trading in your 40 and getting a BC model (unless the slim ad is real) it would be cheaper to buy a PS2 $99 and a 500gig drive $90.

I can understand wanting to play PS2 games but I cannot for the life of me understand the storage reason. And yes you can run a back up

Have to completely agree it takes no time to upgrade the HD and is dirt cheap -you may need an external HD to transfer data and back up your HD which will cost $79 for a 320 Gig.
The 20gig and 60gig were both 100% BC because they both had the Emotion Engine (hardware used in the PS2). The 80gig with 4 usb ports uses software emulation and is about 90% BC... in my experience this is the case, but I haven't tried every PS2 game. TC: If you can find a MGS4 Bundle... it has an 80gig with BC. Otherwise, I agree with 360hammer. If you need more HDD space... upgrade. You'll spend more than $99 trading in your 40gig for a BC PS3... so it makes since to just get a new PS2.you can still get older versions of the ps3 with the graphics emulator but they are pricy.
