We've heard of many hardware failures, overheating, and YLOD cases. I'm wondering, are these caused by misuse? (such as leaving it on for long periods of time, bad ventilation, etc.)

Or, is it like the Xbox where the RROD just appears no matter how you polish or care for it?

I want to believe that the owners of broken systems are just careless, but I've heard of cases where they actually do take care of their system.

The only thing that makes me doubt is that I take great care of my system and I've had it for over a year now, but there's always a possiblity that I could have to eat my words.

i want to too....i heard all kinds of stories on here like how they just turn it off with the switch and left it on for a whole week without using a intercooler on anything.... if they are going to abuse it they might as well loose it..

I think console failures are a direct result of lack of care from the owner. Nothing else. I say this because I've never had a console break on me. I've owned a PS1, PS2, PS3, and 360, and none of them have ever/had a problem, most likely because I take great care of them.

some im sure is from misuse, but the hard truth is that ANY THING man made can fail.there will always be "lemons" . same with cars even cloths. but that sure does not stop ignorant people from bashing others who have not been as lucky as them.

I really want to clean out my ps3 because my house is ridiculously dusty but its still under warranty until december. Not sure if my 360 is under warranty. It was originally purchased Jan. of this year but I bought it from some guy off of craigslist. So far it runs fine, a little loud, but fine.

I've left my PS3 on for about 8 months with Folding@Home and its fine. Does that count as misuse?

Sometimes electronics die despite the owner keeping great care of it. It just happens. Video game consoles are not immune to this fact. You may keep excellent care of your system, but that doesn't mean it won't die.

All you can do is keep care of it and hopefully nothing will happen to it.

YUP!

Sorry guys, but that is just not always the case. Do some research on electronics and you'll see that they sometimes fail despite excellent owner care.

I have a good buddy that takes extremely good care of his PS3 and, guess what? It died.

On the flip side, I have a friend who does not keep very good care of his PS3. It's dusty as hell, he keeps it in a tight and enclosed cabinet with little air around it, and yet he's had it since launch day and it's in perfect running order.

PS3s can die. They can die from misuse, and they can die when you keep excellent care of it. When you're dealing with electronics, you will always have a chance of failure.

Vacuuming PS3s, it seems a tad extreme to me. I don't believe these systems should need cleaning, my PS2 never got cleaned and it worked for years and years until the lense stopped working as well and I had to go into the machine and change the height of it for different type of discs and ended up just throwing in the towel.

I google online just to check what the YLOD meant, and then I read a lot about it, watch a youtube video on how to fix and everything, read many responses on sites, and I notice that like 80/90% of those who said they got the YLOD where playing COD4, I wonder if that is just a coincidence...
