Wanting to purchase a PS3 for Last of Us, Uncharted, Nba 2k13, and maybe CODBLOPS 2. My experience with Sony consoles has not been overly positive. I have owned many consoles going back to the Atari 2600, and they all are still in working condidtion, except for my 2 psones, Dreamcast, and PS2. Those all failed on me, but I know others who have had great luck with PS2 especially. I have played a Slim version and must admit it does get really hot. I have also seen it shut down due to heat on a few occasions. According to Endless Electronics. org , the Slim actually runs hotter than the original, and 20-30% of their repair business is now PS3 Slim models. That does not make me feel better about my purchase.

Does anyone have a new model yet? I have read several reviews, and not one of them have mentioned whether it runs any cooler. Not sure if they shrunk the CPU/GPU again or if 45nm is the smallest available. I am not a huge fan of the aesthetics of the new machine, but if it runs cooler and will last longer, then okay.

One last question, do the ps3 systems get as hot running netflix and/or DVD/Blu Ray movies?

Thanks in advance.

PS2 was extremely reliable, EXCEPT for the DVD drive.

PS3 slim does get a little hot, hopefully the new one is really cool. You would think by now since CELLPHONES offer as much technical computing power, that if they wanted to they should be able to make a completely silent/cool PS3 model. I don't really think with the first slim model though that too many failures are due to "heat", most likely it's still going to be the laser on the blu-ray drive or even the HDD failing. YLOD failure was more of a problem with the fat model PS3.

Anyway, to anwser just one of your questions my current PS3 slim does get pretty much as hot playing movies as it does games. I never thought it was a major issue, although it's slightly more annoying watching Netflix and when the movie/show gets quiet you can hear the fan going to just enough to be audible. It's not a huge complaint, but I certainly would want the new model to be much, much cooler and totally silent. There's really no reason for it not to be at this point and it would be a failure if there wasn't a massive improvement in those areas.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer. And yes, my ps2 failure was indeed disc read error. I read somewhere where the ps3 uses quite a bit of power to run movies and programs, so that would make sense for it to run just as hot. The power was something like 4-5x what a standard bluray player uses to play movies.

Thanks again.

Anyone else with personal experience on slim/superslim?

Hmm wierd about your ps2. Those things could go to hell and back and still work.....twice.

The slim model is more reliable than the fat model. With that said, you will need to keep it in a well ventalated area, and keep it dusted outside and in the HDD compartment or else it will get to hot and fail on you in due time.

I have no idea about the super slim model. Maybe they just made it more compact for reasons unknown.

I still have an original 60gb and it can heat up my room with folding at home on. A friend has a slim and it gets really hot too but he also has his in a very confined area. For the new super slim i kinda doubt it is much better than the slim since they would have made an announcement to that fact. Really if i had the spare cash i would rather buy a stand alone BD player (that has netflix) since really i only use the PS3 for games because of the heat. Till winter comes then it will actually be nice lol.

All my PS systems have all been very reliable. I take good car of my PS3 but my PS2 took a beating from us (it fell out of a book case one time, and my mom hit it with the handle of one of her big brushes) and it still worked till the day I sold it.

Dont know about running cooler but in the ign unboxing video they said Sony mentioned its supposed to run a bit louder then the current slim. I doubt it'll run cooler though. Less space for ventilation more chances of overheating. It was like that from fat PS2 to slim PS2 and from fat PS3 to current slim PS3. This one will probably overheat more easily. I just bought a current slim before they're replaced by the new ones. For roughly the same a super slim 12gb will cost (229 euros) I bought a current 160gb slim plus GT5... way better of a deal if you ask me

I'm pretty sure the current slim model runs cool enough. I remember my 60GB could literally warm up an entire room whereas the latest slim felt mildly warm to the touch and could not be used as a heater :P

ps2's disc read error was pretty much easy to fix. All you need to do is clean its lens. I clean mine and it works 100 percent except those blue disc thing.

For me i love my ps3 but making those slim models gives me the creeps. Sorry peaople but i already known after PSX/PSONE, PS2/Slim tkat the ps3 will also have a slim version but now super slim is just insane!. Taking peoples money for the same stuff just smaler and a little bit tuned is bad and just bad and MS is making the same and this has to stop. I am no conspiration man or something like it but if you have a ps3 and want to pay extra to buy the super slim is just crazy. Peace&love. PS: it is of course just my opinion but i would like you to wright me why i am wrong or if i am right :)

You're wrong on many levels; and not just because of your inability to convey an idea through written means.

Same here-I just picked up a brand new current model 320Gb slim, with move starter bundle thrown in,Sorcerer game and Blu ray film Karate Kid for roughly £45 less than the stand alone new super slim 500gb.

 "Conspiration man" If you already own a PS3 then you really don't need to worry about buying this new system, do you? Unless your PS3 has recently broken. So Sony isn't taking anyone's money except those people who don't own the system or need to replace one. Peace ;)

I do, I purchased one earlier this week and I find it to be excellent. It's much smaller and seems to run a little cooler than the old slim but overall it still gets warm. The only annoyance you might find is the new sliding door disk tray. It's a neat concept but it's bothersome compared to the old drive.

thanks for your response. My entertainment center has a shelf under the tv with about 8" of clearance to the top and around 8" on either side. the back is closed in, however. Would I have overheating issues with this new model do you think?

I'm no tech expert, but I would imagine the Super Slim runs a little cooler since it's a top loader, with the discs spinning at the top of the machine. It's also a super light console so that usually means overheating won't be a problem. Looking to get a Super Slim myself after my fat just died on me.

Seriously my Fat PS2 was jumped on by toddlers dropped down stairs had soda being spilled all over it and much more that thing was still kicking until the day I sold it. I only wish the PS3 was the same I'm so worried about the damn thing I dust it every week and keep it on a shelf so high I need a stool to reach it.

I bought a new slim and I had it running all night, and it seemed to be very cool and quiet. However, download speed seems to go sooo slow.

You won't have any problems from mh experience. I have mine in a similar place with a 360 slim beside it, so I have even less room on one side. It seems like it is always running at the same temps no matter what you do. I have to say this much though, somoene else mentioned slow download times, mine is the same as before but it has much slower install times it seems like. I just redownloaded UC2 GOTY and it's just under 20 gbs, and that went at the standard rate for my connection. HOWEVER, It's been installing that for several hours.......
