Help, my ps3 is 160gb asian, the screen flickers (not very noticeable, but you can still see it and its irritating) especially when in black xmb. i only set it at 720p because my hdtv resolution is only 1366x768. im thinking of changing my component cable to hdmi cable, but im scared because i hear a lot of people complaining about their 160gb getting the RSOD (red screen of death) when they configure it to hdmi. any advice on how should i do it? and also about the audio output, how should i set it? (i only have the tv, no home theater, external speakers, etc)

if i am not mistaken the maximum resolution a component cable can have is 720p, however if you use an hdmi cable you may be able to use your tv in 1080i resolution... the reason why your screen may be flickering is that your component cable might be running along with power (electricity) cables which do create a magnetic field around them and because of it your tv might flicker... try to have the component cable run separately to your tv set, it might be such an easy problem...

My component cable before supports 720p till 1080p.

I already switched from component cable to hdmi cable, the flicker is gone. :)

Question is when I try to configure the video output to hdmi then automatically video detect for the ps3, the result is 1080p. I see it both from xmb and the display from my tv. But my tv's resolution is only 1366x768 (720p) Why is that? Should I do the manual and just check the 720p? I don't want to stress the ps3 / tv. And is it ok to play hi-def (720p or 1080p) all the time? I'm worried for the tv that it might be stressed because of the hi-def always or for the ps3 overheat. Correct me if I'm wrong.

This means that your TV is capable of accepting a 1080p signal. It scales the 1080p signal to fit your TV, and it is not harmful to the TV, so you can use that setting if you want.

Even when you send it a 720p signal to your TV it still has to scale it, because 720p has a resolution of 1280x720 and your TV is 1366x768.

Component cables can carry a 1080p signal on the PS3, but only for games. Blu-ray movies will be downsampled (to either 1080i or 720p, I'm not sure which). And you also can't upscale DVDs to HD when using a component cable, it will keep them at 480p, so the TV would then have to scale them to HD.

Oh I see.. Maybe that's why.. I tried to compare 720p and 1080p with my 1366x768 resolution tv, I saw a slight clearer image / picture quality with 1080p. Are you sure it's safe for my tv and ps3 to use 1080p? Maybe I'll just stick to that, coz the problem is gone if I let the ps3 decide and use 1080p. I just use 720p before coz I'm worried for my ps3 and tv.

If the TV shows the image correctly, then there should be no problem. But if you want to be sure, read the TV's user manual, it should list all supported resolutions in the specifications.
