I´m considering buying a PS3 slim for my son but I would like to know if the console is compatible with PS2 games.

I heard the system gives you the chance to create virtual PS1 and PS2 memory cards but I also heard that It only works for PS1 games. Is this accurate?

And if it is,how so?I was under the impression that the normal PS3 ran PS2 games(or it didn´t?).

Also,I´m in a PAL region(although I don´t think that makes any diference).

Any help would be much apreciated.

Cheers

No, sorry to tell you but newer PS3s are not compatible with PS2 games.

The only PS3s that were compatible with PS2s in Europe were the 60GB PS3s that came out when the PS3 was first launched.

PS3 Slim can play PS1 games but not PS2 games.....there were a set of B/C PS3s that could play PS2 games but they were first generation and they had four USB ports.....it was the 60/80 GB PS3s but the latest PS3s that have come out have had no PS2 compatibility so that they could drop the price a bit...but hey man for a dad you werent too far off....the PS3 is a great system and youll even love it....word from the wise though try going on E Bay and see if you can get any BC PS3s...

Yeah its a shame they didn't put BC back into the slim. They would justify it with "costs" but its 10 year old tech, well 15 since Sony was messing around with PS2 hardware before the PS1 launch. The real reason we suffer is it would slow PS2 sales which are still mystifyingly good. I guess they figure they get to sell us two consoles instead of putting it into one package.

Shockingly yes it does get new games. A fraction of what it once was but it gets a lot of Wii ports these days and companies like EA and Activision seem to port everything they can to it. It gets no major new releases though I think it selling good is more it's price point and appeal to casual gamers.

Actually, it was for costs issues. Even though it'll only costs $10 to put it in. Sony was/is trying to cut as many costs with the PS3 as Sony has lost tons of money on the PS3. That's why Sony cut the memory card readers, 2 USB drives, and the ability to install 3rd party OSes. When the PS3 was first released it costs $800 to manufacture, so Sony was losing $300 on each PS3 sold. Even though its much cheaper to manufacture now, Sony still isn't making a profit on each PS3 sold, they're either breaking even or losing a few dollars. Any little bit helps, especially if its manufactured in the millions.

I see.I was actualy thinking of getting one for myself as the games are cheaper now(and so is the system)but sadly most of the games I would like to experience(such as Ico,Okami and Shadow of the colossus)are very hard to track down.

I need to get a new PS2 myself. My old PS2 broke so I figured I would upgrade to PS3. This all happened right after Sony yanked the backwards compatible 80GBs out of production. I thought they were releasing it later than they did and it was still safe to buy a PS3 so I did only to discover nothing worked. Instead of buying a PS2 after that I used my PS2 collection to invest in my new console and traded them in and got a bunch of PS3 games.

It was a good choice, although if you had rare ps2 games maybe that wasn´t the best decision I guess.

in some fashion, Sony will bring back BC. The recent Sega bringing Dreamcast aswell proves Sony has somthing up their sleeve.. im not 100% sure but its been rumored that Sony already has the ability to release software emulation via firmware but figuring out how to make a profit from it.

PSN downloads and an emulator would be a great update. I really hope they bring back full BC.

When you get that PS3 you may want to get a second controller for yourself and try to find a game or two that has a two player option off line to where you and your son can get some quality father-son time in.

Actually, there has been a lot flying around about PS2 games being re-released on PS3 in collection form. So those who want some PS2 games might be in luck soon. Last I've read, Capcom was on board as well. Not sure what other third parties would be doing this. But it might catch on since "recycling" seems to be the theme or fad of the past couple of years.

nope... but Sony might give us a PS2 emulator update in the future... it's definitely a possibility.
