I've been having this problem with my PS3 where it seems to love leaving circular-ish marks on any discs it plays all while leaving scratches as well. I sent it in for repairs and got it back today, only for the problems to worsen. I'm sending back to Sony(again). I was just wondering have any of you who own or owned a PS3 experienced anything like this before or does anyone know what could be causing it?

thats a first i heard of this problem.....i mean putting in games u play and leaves scratches? either ur doin somethin, or the ps3 lens or somethin inside might be dirty? but this is weird i only heard this problem happen to the other system. but i hope u get it fixed this time. anyways try cleaning it, vacuum the vents or get compressed air can and blow from front to back and see if that helps.

I do find it extremely strange though. I asked Sony about what it could be and they never specified it. I don't think I effed it up myself because I never really used it in ways that could end up damaging it. I tried what you mentioned, no luck, still does it.

I'm having a hard time believing this, normally you'd have to take a knife to a BR disk to do any damage.

I'm not lying. If I can find my camera, I'll post pictures of what it did to my Ninja Gaiden Sigma disc

With Blu-Ray I would think that chances are the disc would ruin the part that causing the problem before it would scratch the disc.

This sounds like what the xbox 360 disc drive does to disc if you move the console while the disc is spinning. First I've heard of it happen on the PS3.

Do you hear any kind of odd sounds coming from the BD drive while playing a disc game? Any kind of weird rubbing/friction or something like that?

Never been an issue with me. Is your PS3 on a sturdy surface?

Its placed on the floor and I never move it or do anything to abuse when I am using it or not using it. This problem just suddenly appeared about a month ago(I've had it since January) and started marking and scratching any discs I played. I do not think I will be able to do much except to send it to Sony again. Hopefully they'll give me a replacement console

You people shouldn't act so surprised by this. While it's not common, it's entirely possible. I've had this happen to a friend of mine, and it's not pretty. He sent his PS3 back because of it. I would love to take your PS3 and take it apart to find the problem in the disc drive. My theory is that the lens mount is not securely placed, or a part of the frame is loose.

Well the discs are 0.05mm away from the laser so a grain of dust can be the culprit and should be a more common problem than on xbox based purely on the discs being much much closer to the laser...

This is what my PS3 did before it outright died. I hope you are still under warranty or else a $180 bill for something you didn't cause won't be very nice.

Quick question if you don't mind - did you ask Sony to replace the discs that got scratched and what was their response?

I'm gonna guess they'd say forget it but if the problem is with the machine, they should be liable.

Just curious...

Crap... I seem to be having the same problem with my PS3 Slim, it's scratching all my discs in a circular pattern from inside out. I don't know what is causing the problem yet; it ruined four of my anime discs before I figured it out. I'll try the air can before I call Sony, but damn.... this sucks. It even made the circular pattern on a cleaning disc, the whole thing seems out of balance.
