This involves turning two knobs on the power supply component slightly. It seems like this worked for a lot of people as well, although I haven't heard too much on how long it lasts or whether it could screw the console up even more in the long run. See the videos below. Anyone here tried this?

Ther was this guy on youtube that posted a video over a hour long doing the blow dryer trick, and it worked. But He did also say it was a tempoaray fix.

Keep in mind that the Yellow Light of Death is a general hardware failure. Heck I'm not even sure there is a yellow light led on the PS3 slim. It might not be the power supply that has caused the YLOD. Although if your PS3 Slim is powering off with no light, that might point towards it being the power supply.

Never actually tried what the person is doing in that video tbh as my PS Slim hasn't broke down yet. He seems to know what he's doing and it doesn't look that hard at all to take out the power supply. It looks like turning those nozzles on the powersupply I think might change the voltages in some way I'm guessing? In which case if you get that wrong you might severely screw up your PS3 slim. I'd either send it to Sony to get fixed or buy a new PS3 slim just to be on the safe side. Either way this is not a common issue at least I've never heard of it happening. You get more PS3 fats breaking down than you do slims.

Why should I pay hundreds to get my console fixed or replaced when it isn't my fault?

It's 150 I think and all electronic, car, etc. companies do this. They have a set warranty and once outside that warranty they charge you less than it costs for a new console to get it fixed. This is why extended warranties are a good idea on electronic components that generate a lot of heat and are used a lot. It does suck though and I think a 1 year warranty is not good enough, but what can ya do.

I wish I could, but at this moment, I honestly have no idea.

I kept the PS3 reasonably well-ventilated, mostly dustfree and it was not played for more than a few hours a week max on average (it was sometimes played for several hours at a time, but never more than that).

In fact, it was working just fine up until just 1 or 2 weeks ago, when apparently my brother first encountered the issue. Our last play session was perfectly fine: no hint at anything going down the drain.

Perhaps Sony put a timebomb on some PS3 slims (not all, or it would be too suspicious). Seriously, what the fudge happened to cause the YLOD? And why the hell does it cost over $100 to get it repaired? Sony is a POC.
