Lately in the media, Sony has been talking about looking at ways to decrease money loss and increase profitability regarding the PS3. Since the first batch of killer software for the PS3 is still months away, one way Sony has hinted at would be a price drop to get more units into gamer's hands. The point is: Sony is rethinking their current strategy.

As time goes by, the custom crafted components of the PS3 are going to become cheaper and easier to produce. Also, some of the issues the system has with online service and PSP connectivity can be easily solved with software solutions at a later date. On thing that had caused more of a negative effect on Sony's machine than Sony had first anticipated is the issues with backward compatibilty. The biggest issue, not being able to use PS2 peripherals, such as Guitar Hero controllers and memory cards.

Since the DS under went the transition to the DS Lite a year after it as released and the Xbox 360 is rumored to soon go through a transition to a different model as well, is it possible we could soon see the same thing happen to the PS3? If Sony was to remodel the PS3, would the current user base care?

Unlike the Xbox 360, the PS3 already includes all of the HD ports it needs. A remodelling of the PS3 might see a subtraction of a few things like USB ports and SD card slots in favor on Dual Shock ports and memory card slots. My question is: If the PS3 were remodelled in such a fashion, how would you feel about it? Would you feel cheated? Would you feel better, that you're current PS3 may become a collector's item? Or would you not care at all?

Logically, as in the past Sony has only removed those things that have been underused ore not used at all. The original PS2 lost the IEEE port for connected console gaming, the PSTwo lost the hard drive bay. In both cases they only slimed down the technology foot print and never the capability of the system, never actually adding anything.

Would they remove USB ports? unlikly as they're very useful and most of all cheap. Would they add Memory card slot? unlikely because that means they loose the opportinity to sell card reading periperals. Would they remove the media card slots? possibly if they dont see use they might concider the lesser used ones like Compact flash but never the memorystick slot because it drives sales of that particular product to have it in the PS3 and PSP as well as some televisions.  A PS2 controller slot? that would be adding hardware and if the idea is to reduce the technology footptint then this is a contradictory concept. A better plan would simply be to release their own first party adaptor to correct the loss of PS2 peripherals, but apparently Nyko is taking care of this.

No I wouldnt be disturbed by a Slim PS3, it would simply be nothing more than a smaller version of what i already have and besides concidering whats inside the system there's only so much they can reduce it this early in the life of the technology. It wont be fore anoher 2 or 3 years before tchnology has advanced enough that they can put everything the PS3 is NOW into a smaller box.

Personally, I think all this speculation is a bit premature.

It can't be done untill the CPU and GPU achieves a massive shrink in nm. Thats the reason why most systems don't get a slimline untill at least 2-3 years into production. You can't just make ist smaller cause you wanna, it takes a leap in core archecture smaller chips producing less heat thus requiring less cooling infastructure. In other words what your saying won't happen for another 2-3 years by then nobody will even care.
