The PS3 doesn't support all types? What does it support?

I think there's a program out there that allows you to watch more movie formats but I forgot what :(. Try looking online.

Just generally stick to mpegs and you be ok.

most mpeg2s and some mpeg4s, My memory is not that good remembering that stuff.

MPEG-1, MPEG-2 (PS,TS), H.264/MEPG-4 AVC,MPEG-4 SP

But hopefully sometime in the future network updates may let us play formats such as avi/divx:)

I doubt that would happen b/c Sony wants to make money through people buying blu ray movies. Enabling the PS3 to play more video formats especially avi/divx would encourage piracy and little need to buy the actual movies.
