Hey ive been considering buying a surround sound system to hook up to my t.v. to connect with my ps3. i dont want to spend more than $500 so i know im not asking for the worlds greatest surround system but i want something decent to make my games sound awesome as well as my blu ray movies. something along the lines of 5.1 would be fine becuase my living room is kind of small and plus not that many options to place the speakers. my current tv is a sony 46 kdl xbr2 with a 60gb launch ps3. so what im asking is for anyone out there that has a surround sound system hooked up to their ps3 or know someone who does which model surround system would you recommend that would offer the most bang for my buck.

If you know where to look... There are AMAZING KEF KHT2005.2 5.1 speakers that go on sale for $450 + tax + shipping + your receiver... Which is the best speaker deal I've ever seen. However, I don't think americans can get it because it's from NCIX.com which is a canadian computer retailer and the US site doesn't have the same surprise specials or list the item. The only other good buy (which is what I did) is get some Logitech Z5500 speakers for $250. You don't need a receiver or anything... Just an optical cable. They fill the room decently (Mines about 14 feet by 10 feet?), and they do what I want... Play music loud with good base and still give me directional sound. They're the best computer speakers on the market, so they shouldn't be overlooked or underestimated. Personally, those are the best 2 "cheap" speaker deals and it's all I would consider.

If you're looking for a home theater in a box ( with upconvert player, 5 speakers and a sub) then the Sony DAVHDX576WF would be a good choice. It's nice because it does have wireless rear speakers so you wont have to bother running speaker wire and tucking it through out your living room. If your wanting a stand alone reciever and speakers then I would suggest going with any Yamaha branded receiver seeing as how they are the best rated and tend to have really good ventillation. Naturally there are better receivers out there but none that could even keep you within your 500 dollar limit. My personal recommendation would be going with the Yamaha 663 receiver. First reason is because it does have video and audio processing, meaning that you can just run an HDMI to handle both video and audio as opposed to having to run either an HDMI and a Digital Audio cable (optical) to attain that dolby DTS 5.1. Aside from having the video and audio processing it also is capable of upscaling your analog signals that your sending into the receiver. So if you have an older system like a nintendo or something with red, white and yellow connectors it will make it look/sound better. Speaker wise, You should be able to find a nice pair of Polk Audio bookshelf speakers that will tide you over until you want to upgrade to higher quality speakers. Your best bet is going to go with that Sony model i first mentioned or another audio system along those lines. The downside is that they don't really have any inputs. You will be able to run atleast 1 optical cable into it (depending on the model maybe 2) whereas with the Yamaha (or any other brand) of receivers you have a much much larger array of hookups to work with. I hope I helped you out the somewhat. If you have any other questions give me a PM or something.

I got a home theatre in a box from www.newegg.com i got the Panasonic SC-PT960 its 5.1 like 1250 watts comes with a 5 disc dvd change with upconvert(not like it matters u have ps3) has wireless rear speakers. My room is pretty small and this system shakes it to the foundation haha. Cant complain for around $450 and an easy install. Only problem is it does NOT come with an HDMI or optical cable, kinda weaksauce.

The absolute best thing you can do is go to a local theater store and listen to all of the ones they have, then decide what sounds best for you. Most in a box systems are similar and usually it will depend on what reciever features you want as to how much youll pay.

Go to best buy's theatre department and blast the speakers. Determine which one you like. Also check out CNET's reviews on surround sound systems. I'm sure you could find something nice.
