My friend has an 80gb backwards compatible model. He told me that he heard rattling noises coming from the system, not sure if it was in the middle of a game, before he put a game in, or what. But there was that noise and then later on apparently the system damaged two of his discs, a dvd and a blu ray disc. I guess the cut from the laser goes from the inside outward to the edge and not totally straight, but not curved either. Any one have a proper diagnosis for this? Does he need a whole new blu ray drive? Could the problem be anywhere else?

Please and Thanks for any help!

Sellotape a bit of sandpaper to an old dvd and play it.... that should fix it... Ok seriously it sounds like something has broken off and when the disc spins it damages it... might be one of the gyro's that stabilise the disc when it spins has broken causing it wobble and get damaged. So evidently yes, it's the blu-ray player not just the laser...

So the sandpaper thing will fix the laser? But what about that rattling I guess? I mean couldn't it be the fan? I haven't had time to open it up and look at it yet but I'm thinking somehow something came loose (obviously). I'm debating on telling him he needs to buy that new blu ray drive

That seems to be something has broke in the Blu-Ray drive. Just replace the drive and you should be good to go.
