First off sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

I have a 52 inch LCD HD tv that supports up to 1080i. I'm running component cables right now. I have a DVI port and know my TV is HDCP compliant, but my question is does anyone know if the HDMI to DVI cables are even worth buying if I'm only running 720p or 1080i. Does going digital make that much of a difference running at resolutions that aren't 1080p?

Again thanks in advance and sorry if this is the wrong forum.

i reccomend, if u have a port - to use the HDMI cable and not go to DVI... but thats just my opinion - there is alot of contrversy about HD cables and things and ppl can get pretty anal about it - i mean they go to lenghs of thickness and lengh of cable and people have different views on what is the best type...i think that if ur seeing the picture fine in 720p and 1080i and dont see any stretching/missing parts scratches or what ever then keep it - but if u have a cable lying around give it a go and switch and see what suits u best

I can't remember the exact details, however HDMI is better than DVI. Someone else can probably link to an article to explain that.

The deference will still be noticable because your using a digital (HDMI) signal over and analogue (compenet) for both sound and visuals. Look it up on wikipedia if you want the gory details but the simple answer is yes, you will notice it.

I'd love to use HDMI ports, but unfortunately, my TV has no HDMI ports. I bought it in 2004 before it was standard in most TVs. That is why the closest I can get is DVI to HDMI my TV has Component, Composite, S Video, and DVI ports.

Thanks for all the input sofar.

Something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812226015would do it. Might as well stick to component for non-1080p rez imo.

Thanks for the link. I figure I'll probably stick to Component. I've read that DVI gives you a fully digital picture just not with the sound like HDMI does. It's more of a curiousity factor to see if there would be that much of a difference on my TV. I'm not unhappy with the picture that I have so I guess if I come across a cheap cable I'll give it a go just to see if I can tell a difference.

Thanks again for all the help.

Just thought I would give an update.

I couldn't resist I went and bout Phillips HDMI to DVI cord. Have been comparing movies and games and I have to say hands down that on everything I can tell a difference in the DVI and Components. DVI sends a tighter cleaner image and it seems like the color is a little more vibrant. May just be my eyes but my wife says the same thing.

So even at 720p and 1080i resolutions it seems that the digital signal is better than the analog.

The only way to upconvert dvd's is to buy the hdmi - dvi cables. That alone is worth it imo. The only diffence in hdmi and dvi is that the hdmi carries both audio and video where as the dvi just carries the video signal..

I just purchased an HDMI to DVI cable for $6.95(w/shipping and all) off ebay. Hopefully I have the same results(good) as you. If not oh well it was only $6.95.

I bought the cables at Wal-Mart for $30. I know a lot of money but I'm impatient and I had to see the difference. I've had a whole weekend with them to watch movies and play games and I think there is a huge difference. I did a lot of playing with the component cables vs the hdmi-dvi cables and it seems like the dvi cables give more vibrant colors and add a certain amount of depth to the picture. I figure I could get the cables cheaper but I'm happy I think it was a great purchase and to all of you in the same boat that I'm in, if anything, go get some just to ease your curiousity. I don't think you'll be dissapointed.

You're right, DVI has no sound. I'm running optical from my PS3 to my surround sound.

Using DVI on my computer monitor looks WAY better than using component on my regular TV, though I don't think that is due to going through a digital signal. 1080i and 720p are just resolutions, and the DVI port is just an interface, so you probably won't even notice any difference.

Actually, you will notice the difference. The most apparent reason is because digital DVI/HDMI is lossless, component cable is not. If you have a super expensive component cable (I'm talking about $400 price tag), then your component cable will as good as HDMI/DVI.

Go to monoprice.com and order the HDMI/DVI cable (probably $10). They have HDMI to DVD cable (one side is in HDMI, another end is in DVI), and you will see the difference.

DVI is literally identical to HDMI (carries the exact same digital video data, which is why you can get an HDMI/DVI adapter in the first place) but doesn't carry the audio data that HDMI does. That is the only difference, anyone that tells you otherwise is lying.

Thats exactly right. I've read so many threads about which picture looks better and it seems like there are so many different views on the subject. My only advice is to get the cable and try it out for yourself and see if you like the difference. if you get the cord from Wal-Mart I guess you could always just return it if you didn't think it made that much of a difference.

Yeah the $30 cables were expensive when you can get them for that cheap, but I didn't want to wait for a website to mail them so I just went and picked them up. Decided I liked them.
