Sony has announced that the PS3 will have support for 3D gaming via a firmware update in the future

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/sonys-3d-strategy-to-incorporate-ps3

Now my question is,will we need any special TV's,accessories or add-ons to be able to utilize that 3D gaming functionality?

theres not much news on it yet, they're being pretty secretive. if they had any pinch of business sense at all they'd make it universal for all 120hz+ tv's. if they're doing it hoping to sell sony brand 3d tv's then i think it's going to be a waste of money on both ends. sure it'll sell their proprietary tv's to people who can afford them and/or need a new HDTV, but someone like me who spent 4g's on a plasma, i'm not trading in my tv just to get a 3d tv.

When the firmware update to support 3D blu-ray is released the only extra components you should need are glasses. But it will require a 3D ready TV, as the 3D is optimal quality, not the old anaglyph red and blue glasses style. There are a couple articles over at thirdmagazine.com about it: http://thirdmagazine.com/2009/11/19/playstation-3d-firmware-update-coming-to-ps3-in-2010/ and http://thirdmagazine.com/2009/11/08/blu-ray-3d-its-coming/

yea, it you followed CES 2009, almost everyone is coming out with 3-d technology, so yea, when it does become available, you will need to buy a new tv to fully utilize it

I have no use for this 3D crap. I think it is a waste of time and money IMO. Yeah it might be nice for the movies(I guess) but gaming, no.

Are you trying to say that all those HDTV's out there that consumers have spent tons of $$ on will just go down the toilet because they don't support 3D?

3D has never interested me really, but 3D gaming does, and I hope it takes off well!

Just telling you now. It's been flopping since the 50's, today isn't any different.

It's nothing but a gimmick and a waste of everything. The only true way to 3D gaming are cost effective projections of some kind. Not glasses, or messed up TV screens. Something that anyone can access with ease. As easy as turning on the TV itself.

All I know is when I went to Disney last year,,,,the old 3d shows are amazing.....Objects looked 95% solid and were very real looking....If anything can be implemented like that in a game would be sick........

I'm definitely up for it. Obviously I'd have to find a way to try it out for myself first but I'm definitely excited to see what it'll be like.

I think theres a few ways this could work AMAZINGLY AMAZINGLY AMAZINGLY WELL with. Because I'm playing MW2 right at this moment, most of these deal with that game. * Grenades in games. 'real' dirt could fly past your head and shrapnel could come straight past you. * Bullets could actually whizz past your head. * Aiming down the sights of the gun could actually make you aim down the sights of your gun! * When moving, things at the sides of you could slightly move past you - not a lot, but enough to give a cool motion blur 'actually' running effect. * When someone knifes you, the dagger could come right into you. * Sweet ass cutscenes. Obviously it changes the way the games played almost, so there must be a way of putting people in 3D with other people in 3D. I can think of loads more but there pretty trivial things - menu's in RPGs, anything that gets shot at you (spells, bullets, knives, arrows etc), abstract games (flow, noby noby boy etc), blood splatters, HUDs, CGI cutscenes, and, ofcourse, horror games. When I was a kid I went to see a 3D movie and it had a spider in it. I cried.

Do you mean something such as holograms sort of thing. Obviously there's a long way to go - but do you mean something which you can just sit down and see, without any peripherals or such? I think that's definitely true, but if they implement it well enough I think it can go well.

This is one of the things that has me a little worried. I just bought an HDTV earlier in the year and thinking that I might soon have to start saving to buy a new one just drives me mad. Well, if anything I might wait some time after the release of 3D TVs to check how it goes.

Well, to a degree. You can have a background, and the foreground is actually in front of you with depth instead of the whole picture just being a flat screen.
