Oh sorry about that. 80 GB with Backwards Compatability. The core model that you purchased does not have it, but the other 80GB models do. From here on out, PS3 will no longer come with BC (Backwards Compatability), unless you purchase one of the few remaining Metal Gear Bundles. The new 160GB PS3 won't have BC either.*sigh* oh well... two things:
1. you mentioned 80gb with "BC" ... wazzat?
2. anyone know if theres going to be software emulation or something, anything that can let me play my ps2 games?

The Graphics Synthesizer is not in the core unit you have, so there will not be an update for software emulation, but they may sell PS2 games in The PS store later on down the road.
If your retailer allows, you can exchange it for store credit and label it as "damaged".

I don't think there will be an update because the hardware isn't the same in the newer 80 gig systems. The very best was the 60 gig PS3 followed by the 20 gig because both of these had all the same hardware as the PS2 has. The 80 gig bundle had the EE chip removed but it had the video hardware that allowed software emulation to work. The 40 and the newer 80 gig had all the hardware removed thus little to no chance of the latter 80 gig PS3's ever supporting PS2 games.

uggghhh i spent hours researching which ps3 model would be best to buy and everything online said 80gbs could play ps2 games... urrgh why would sony remove the backwards compatibilty? honestly? do they hate gamers or something!!

The old 500 dollar 80GB could play PS2 games. The new 400 Dollar one can't, since it's really nothing more than the "40GB" bundled with a bigger hard drive.
Backwards compatibility was removed to save cost. You see the PS3 isn't "powerful enough" to emulate the PS2 100%... emulation usually requires the system emulating to be more times more powerful than the system being emulated (how much more powerful depends on how different the hardware is, with PS3 and PS2 being apple and antelope).... so the old one still had a physical "Graphics Synthesizer" GPU.
1) BC = backwards compatibility - means that it can play PS2 games.*sigh* oh well... two things:

2) Sony basically said "No more backwards compatibility".
Your best bet would be to get your receipt and take it back and get the "other" 80 GB models:i.e MGS4 or Motorstorm bundle.
Nothing wrong with saving money, especially now-a-days.

BC=Backwards compatibility... *smacks head on desk a second time* well duh...how the hell did i not see that. also the point is now moot anyway, called up a friend that dosen't use his ps2 anymore (HE got the 60 gb... i'd have followed his example if they weren't so hard to find) and he says he'll sell it to me for essentially pocket change.
something interesting that i realized: the ps3 is the only console to my knowledge that can send a person through the 5 stages of grief and in less than 45 minutes time no less. behold my thought processes with actual quotes.
1. (denial) "huh, 'this model of ps3 system is not compatible with ps2 format software' ... i must be doing something wrong"
note: they need to put BC information on the ps3 box or something
2. (anger) 'If you bought the new 80GB, then it won't play your PS2 games.' " huh?! well why the f**k not!?"
3. (depression) " *sigh* three dozen ps2 games and now their nothing more than plastic and metal"
note: followed by a brief relapse into anger
4. (bargaining) "well wait maybe i can get my money back and then find a 60gb or an old 80 gb, that'll work hopefully"
note: hope, apparently is not enough to send mgs4 bundles to my locale gamestop
5. (acceptance) "hmm... didn't Lucas gloat that he never uses his ps2 anymore, wonder if he'd give it to me"
we're like sony's puppets aren't we?

You do know that there is a note on the Box regarding Limited BC and NO BC right? Because its there, and it has a nice red frame that actually makes it pop up from the rest of the information

You are Forgiven. Its OK, most dont read the box and assume there is no warning. I know cause I have a Motorstorm LE 80G and I have this sign on both the side front and back of the box.

Do you have any idea how many times I see someone try to push a door that clearly says pull? It happens to (mostly) everyone from time to time. Ever loose your keys, only to find them on the table or in your pocket? It's no big deal.
the only way for you to get ps2 BC is to get the Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 bundle, none of the future PS3's that we know of will have it (the 160gb model in Oct. will not have it and the new 80gb does not have it)
some stores still have the bundles so best grab one now cuz i think they'll be discontinuing it soon if not already
i got mine off of ebay cuz all the stores around me are sold out and its cheaper!
i can see why you got the new one, its cheaper, and stores are being misleading about it to get more sales (i.e Gamestop website)
hope this helps
