Well this is a great first post. Anywho, when I try to turn on my ps3 it just beeps and shuts itself off instantly. It first happened about 2 nights ago after I downloaded & tried to play the Yakuza 3 demo. At first I thought nothing of it so I just turned it off & went to sleep, then last night (havent used it all day) I went to play Fallout 3 and not even 5 minutes into it it happens again. I read around and stuff that said it might be the fans so I blew on it a bit then took it out of the place it originally was to a more open area and just left it on without playing anything, that lasted for a few good minutes so I started up a demo and then bam a minute later it shuts off. I gave up and went to sleep again, today I tried turning it on & it does it instantly. Sadly tho, the last thing I wanna do is contact SCEA because 1) It's one of the older 60gigs with backwards compatibility (which I use quite a bit) and 2) I swapped the 60gig hdd for a 250gig because the 60gig was full. I basically don't want to hear that theyre going to replace it and then I end up with one of the newer ones forcing me to by a ps2 aswell, or even worse that the won't do anything because I swapped hard drives. What should I do?

Swapping HDD's is recommended, and they actually show you how to do it in the manual, so that's not going to cause you any grief. As for options, I really can't think of any aside from taking it to a shop that performs repairs like Play N Trade if you've got one and seeing if they think they can fix it....

This is somewhat similar to what happened to me last Saturday. My 60GB ended up getting a YLOD Monday. That same thing might have happened to yours. Check if when you turn it on, it gives three beeps, a yellow light appears and then turns red and flashes. If that's the case your PS3 is dead and will need repairs.

Well that sucks. Your PS3 is gone and so is all the data you have on your HDD if you don't manage to fix this system. Call Sony if you're still under warranty. If you're not, you could try to fix it yourself. Here's a good guide. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_Ic1_TY-GU

I didn't even bother calling Sony. Just went out and bought a 250GB Slim. I've had it with the fat 60GB models. Even after a fix they're highly likely to die again with a YLOD.

usually when computers (or in this case ps3's) turn off by themselves, its due to overheating

I agree. Sony should extend the warranty like that other company did for that other console. I think the YLOD is becoming just as spread as the red ring.

That has happenned to mine twice and ended up YLODing both times. I also have the 60GB model but I got it fixed with console doctor (UK). They managed to fix it both times and I never lost a game or any data. :)

God they really f*#ked up on the 60gig model. Had mine since launch and last week I got the YLOD & I wasnt best pleased at all. So I rang sony & they informed that it would cost £131.00 & take up to 6-8 weeks to fix my 60gig PS3, & I would lose all my data on my hard-drive. Or still pay them £131.00 and get a chunky 120gig.

B@ll@xs to that I thought so back on the net I go & 30 minutes later im watching a episode of BBC Watchdog informing me of the YLOD LOL, Cut a long story short they have 2 guys in a van fixing faulty YLOD 60gig PS3's outside sony offices in London.

I found the guys who fixed them & they work round the corner were I live in East London. They charge £84.99 to fix the PS3, 1 months warranty, time of repair 30 minutes, and all of your data saved. Oh & a USB fan wich clips on the front of the system. HAPPY DAYS I thought.

To make it even better becasue the console isnt 6 years old & I had to pay to get the issue fixed myself. They wrote a letter for me to send to the retailer I bought the console from to asking for the money back £84.99, Becasue of the trades act I shouldnt have to pay for the repair I was informed. People who have bought there consoles from GAME & GAMESTATION have had there money back.

So my PS3 is fixed & I havent losted the data on my hard-drive, it took 30 minutes not 6-8 weeks & fingers crossed I should be getting my money back.

TC, you got ylod. It is becoming fairly common for the older 60 gb models to break down, especially after years of extended use. I had it and got it repaired but it happened again. I got it repair again for free but I am thinking I'm going to take my tax refund to buy a slim, transfer the data, and then sell it.
