I have tried endless google searching, but not really came up with anything so i figured i'd sign up here and ask. I got a used ps3 in october of 07, and has worked good until recently. The only thing it get used for is to watch dvd's and blu-rays. It recently started locking up and freezing. I could turn it off and back on and all was good. I stuck a blu-ray in tonight and it said the encryption code was out of date, and needed to be updated. So i hooked it to the net and downloaded the latest update. It shut off automatically, then i turned it back on it said searching for update. All it did was sit there for like 20 minutes and do nothing, so i shut it off with the switch on the back. Now the green light comes on, and thats it. Anything i can do for it besides throw it away? lol I'm not really looking to spend alot on it cause new ones aren't that expensive anymore. I would like to keep This one though, it is a 60gig that back plays ps2 games

Try holding down the power button on the PS3 itself for 5 seconds (or till it beeps) and see if that brings up anything.

i have 2 suggestions and 1 question

when you turned it on after the update you said it was still searching . did it apply the update ? ( theres supposed to be a second bar after the download saying APPLYING UPDATES) ?

1) try fixing the cable

2) press the button and wait like 30 min see what happenes. cuz your ps3 might be in slow-mo :P

I found some people on the internet that had a simliar problem. Their fix came through the PS3's system recovery menu. I have accessed the menu once so I know this method works, although I vaguely remember hearing they took out the system recovery menu? I don't remember. But do this:

1. Turn off Playstation®3.

2. Hold The power button down; The system will turn on and turn off once again.

3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps

4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.

5. You will be promted to plug in your controller via usb and then hit the PS button

6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

and after (if) you access the recovery menu, do this:

Follow the steps above but first download the latest firmware update from the playstation website and save it onto a USB key. Follow the steps and choose the bottom option "SYSTEM UPDATE". Wait for it to update and it should restart with all your music, videos and gamesaves.

No it never attempted to apply the update. It just sat there saying searching for update, i think it locked up because it wouldn't cancel or anything. None of the buttons on the controller did anything. MC-Reap, i will try that and post up the results.

Well i turned it back on and it pulled right up, installed the update and everything was fine. Or so i thought. I put the movie in, got about 10 minutes into it, the picture froze, but the sound kept working. The controller did nothing, so i had to turn it back off with the switch. I emailed playstation about it and am waiting for a response. MC-reap: I couldn't get it to pull up a recovery menu, but holding the buttons down like you said worked. Just no menu :(

Your best option is to get another PS3. You can resell that version of the PS3 since it is Backwards Compatible. People will buy it and will be able to repair it. The 60giger does hold some value do to the reason Sony not longer makes PS3 consoles with PS2 B/C. Since you mainly use your PS3 for watching Blu-rays and DVDs any PS3 model will do you just fine.

You can get some cash for you busted PS3 60giger and put it towards a new PS3. (I have 127 PS2 and 55 PS1 Disc games) So that is the reason I have a 60gb PS3.

So there is a small niche market of people looking for PS3 60ggers and 80 1st editionand 20 Gigers. For the B/C features. most people don't bother with B/C but your busted console is worth a bit of cash, thus will be repaired and resold.

Playtime service and a few independant Gameshops will ive you cash for your broken 60giger (not much but it is better than nothing) 50-60 dollars

What do you think they would charge to fix it? Depending on whats wrong of course. I wouldn't mind sending it out somewhere, as long as the place is legit. I do (did) play some of my ps2 games on it, i have like 50 of them. I play alot online, but its with my 360, cause thats what all my friends have.

1. It's most likely your video/audio cable. I have had that happen twice and I tried another cable and it was fine.

2. Put on a new cable with the PS3 turned off. Hold down the power button for 2 beeps. The first beep is instant and the second one is 4-5 seconds later.
