now that the ps3s can upscale dvds thanks to firmware 1.8 do u think the ps3 upscaling is ocmparable to a stand alone dvd upscaler say an oppo or a samsung
Its not as good as some stand alone dvd upscalers thats for sure. I have a panasonic one that upscales dvds, and it looks much better than the ps3 upscaling it. When the ps3 upscales it, it looks like its much brighter than it should be. Also, you really don't have any true sharpness/contrast/brightness control which gives my stand-alone upscaling dvd player quite an edge.
I ditched my upscaling DVD player with the update. I have a Panasonic also and the difference is neglible. Both though don't compare to the blu-ray movies. :)
So far for me, I have noticed that some DVD's look better, and some are barely noticeable. Regardless, Upscaling was the #1 update feature I wanted, so I'm happy.
I have no reference for comparison, but when I watched some of my old DVDs without upscaling on my 46" screen, they looked pretty bad and I was somewhat turned off to ever watch DVDs on that TV.
After the update... things look so much better. :)
Like I said, I can't compare it to any other DVD player that upscales, but I have to say that the PS3 does a pretty good job at it. I'm very satisfied.Â
