well, for games, 720P is going to be your preferred format, its not technically scaling down to 720P, 720P is native unless you have a crappy older HDTV. for about half the transmission, you are displaying in 540 lines on 1080I, since it displays the odd, then the even. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interlaced good explanation of it, but all the new techs (DLP, Plasma and LCD) are natively progressive, and downscale to interlaced.

i have a crt and crts display interlaced signals better, much better. i dont have the money to spend on a brand new lcd or dlp. i have a 57in sony now so i would have to get something at least close to the same size and that would cost between 1300 to 1600 dollars. i just spent 720 on the ps3 and two games, i just dont have it and neither do alot of other people. we shouldnt be forced to buy new tvs to get a better picture when sony could have fixed this problem before there ever was one. hell they make tvs they should know.

Are you talking about a 720p only games? What's the big deal with the PS3 changing its output to 720p for the game, then back to 1080i?

If I had the choice I'd disable 1080i, but I can't since blu-ray movies have to play in 1080i, so this causes the dashboard, web browser, and 1080p games to choose 1080i instead of 720p.

The 360 did get it right, one single setting that it sticks with no matter the game or other stuff dows, it will make sure it outputs at that one setting you pick by upscaling or downscaling. While the PS3 screws it all up where 1080i tv owners that can't input 720p are forced to play at 480p with those games. Then all of us with 720p tv owners have to leave 1080i on for blu-ray movies.

But in your case it's not that big of a deal, since the game only renders at 720p who cares if the PS3 upscales to 1080i or if the tv does it. Do you actually have a 720p tv, or CRT that can actually display 1080i?

EDIT:. I see you now mention a CRT tv, so I guess depending on the quality our tv upscales 720p to 1080i could really benefit from the PS3 if it did it instead. Hopefully it will have updates or future games will make sure they have a built in upscaling of some sorts. I wouldn't expect it anytime soon

well, interlaced is a crappy picture format, obviously you dont like reading links. why would sony go out of their way to make 1080I support when they do in fact sell tvs? that means that helps them sell a nice Sony HDTV. 57inch CRT, how many forklifts does it take to move that around? jebus.interlaced is pretty much done, they rarely even offer a TV that natively supports interlaced anymore, cause the others are coming down in price. its a dying market, why waste resources on something this stupid? you made an investment on a CRT tv when you saw the new techs coming out, if you did any research first, you would have realized CRT was dying, and the others would drop in price severely very soon. did you invest in a top of the line VHS player when DVD's came out too? dont blame sony for a bad choice in what you purchased. unless you have the money to blow, you dont invest in something that is possibly going down the tube quickly, CRT was around wayyyyyy to long not to take a nosedive when the other techs came, they just have more to offer.

i have had this tv for three years big mouth, way before these other tvs started to become affordable. besides they should be looking into everyones needs not just those with the newest tvs. it wouldnt have taken that much. even some of the av receivers have scalers in them so explain why you can put one in a receiver and leave out of you biggest product in years, maybe ever.

true, but a better chance then if you werent buying a new tv at all, being that Sony makes arguably one of the best TV's on the market, personally i think a few companies are right there with them, like samsung, but its undeniable Sony makes a fine TV, so its quite possible people will support their tv

You realize that most 1080i native tvs now a days have their own internal scalers that convert that 720p signal to a 1080i signal?  Only older 1080i native HDTVs can't do that, these are also the same tvs that don't support 720p and downconverts it all the way to 480p.

I have Virtual Fighter 5 and it says 720p on the box, but displays at 1080 on my TV.
Set your PS3 to 1080 then try the game.

cant argue that sony makes one of the best, but consumer reports has toshiba right up there with them. they make a mean dlp! thats where i am leaning anyway, but who knows especially with price being a factor.

1080i is not better when the game is rendered in 720p, that's a fact which can't be argues unless your TV is the same size as those at New York Times Square. But if you want to be silly then go into your PS3 screen settings and set it to only support 1080i (if you got both 720p and 1080i marked then obviously VF5 will chose its native resolution 720p because of the better image quality).

it worked. thanks. 1080i does look better by the way. sadly it doesnt work on resistance though. that means its the developers and not the system sort of. i think all games should be this way. give us a choice and not just assume that everyone has a 720p television.

Most PS3 games are rendered in 720p. So, if VF5 is being sent to your HDTV as 720p, it is because that is what the game is. The only way the PS3 could send 1080i to your HDTV is if it was rendered in 1080p.

the reason the games go back to 720p maybe u have a crappy tv or ur system settings is wrong, and the  reason most games are in 720p is u can see fast past action better then in 1080i

it can go higher than 720p. trust me i have seen it. if you dont believe it try it yourself. disable 720p in display settings and it works in 1080i or 1080p if your tv supports it. and it looks better than 720p.

True I have 720p and 1080i disabled and play VF5 in 1080p you just have to manually set it like that.

Wow, i thought my griping of there no being ANY hardware scaling was bad, but theres a forum post like this every day now. Oh well, you have a great reason to gripe, and i'm with you. When the xbox 360 could scale EVERYTHING *dvds only vga, but thats cause its illegal through component* at launch, i was thinking the ps3 would do the same since its at least 100$ more. Though it doesn't, meaning the number of people that can display games in hd is limited. I posted a story on sonys g.a.p. site about this, but i pissed them off and they banned me. Some people say there is a upscaler, but it hasn't been activated. If thats true, the ps3 was rushed and unfinished.

???? You can get up to 1080i if you want in VF5(I think 1080P might even be possible) There must be something wrong with your TV or the way you're setting it as many people have been able to do it.

wasn't it only horizontal scaling that was introduced in the latest sdk kits, I may be wrong but I thought it was only doing horizontal scaling for the time being.

Some games aren't in 1080i, rather 1080p and 720p. It's no scaling issue.

I'm one of the earlier adopters of hdtv that has a bigscreen rear projection 480p, 1080i TV. I, personally, will not go out and buy a TV that is 720p and I advise anyone in the same situation to do the same. The advancements w/ TVs right now is going to make current gen 1080p LCDs become dirt cheap. With the coming of laser and the advancements in DLP it isn't worth investing right now. Especially w/ that Sony showcased at CES with a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. That puts current gen 6k:1 ratios to shame.
