So ive had my ps3 horizontal for about 2 months since i got it.

it always collects heaps of dust on the top and im sick of wiping

because i leave little mraks with any fine cloth i use.

I have made it vertical but i heard with the 360 it messes it up,

does this happen for the ps3 aswell? Id like it to collect less dust so i dont mark it....

but if its bad for the system....

i keep mine horizontal, i mean if u place it vertical then the exhaust fan is blowing upwards, and sure the dust wont settle on the precious ps3 shiny surface but itll settle inside ur ps3 thru the grill for the fan.

im sure it wont hurt the ps3 at all since its obviously been designed to be able to stand up but id rather not have heaps of dust going directly into the system

I've had mine Vertical since I bought it and there's no problems at all. There is never dust in the Fan, regardless of it's position, the bottom of the PS3 collects dust as well as the top.

Regardless of the scientifically optimal positioning, whatever works for you - it doesn't really matter. But I will offer the following argument... First of all, any PS3 owner that's system is horizontal can verify this as well, if you feel the surface under the PS3 after it'sbeen running a few minutes it's actually quite hot, especially at the power button end, now it's not like it's going to catch fire and the PS3 was designed to run at these temperatures but I figure if you have it vertical it will let some heat dissipate and run a little cooler. Actually, I have all three consoles, and the HD DVD add on for the other system, all standing vertical... but that's just because of the way I have my configuration, personal preference- but as far as the PS3 goes my theory is vertical = cooler.

You must have money burning holes in your pockets if you already have a bluray player and still got the hd dvd add on. That or you didn't plan too well and bought the hd dvd and later bought a ps3.

Mine is vertical, has been since march and no problems.

horizontal here, i agree with what heretic92 said, if you leave it vertical and the ps3 isn't running, there'll be more dust inside the ps3 as dust settles, whereas, in horizontal, ull only get dust on the outside.

To me, the internal is more important, outside is just a shell meant to protect the internal. And my ps3 doesn't get too hot, can't feel any heat when i touch it, there's only heat at the vents.

Due to the fact that I also have the "other" system, and the consoles are not stackable, I'm forced to keep my PS3 vertical. But unlike the "other" console, this doesn't influence the stability of the system.

At this point in time though, my "other" system is beginning to get dusty (Due to the fact that most triple A games on that system are genre games I am not interrested in, which bring my choice down abit to sportsgames, which I hate even more).

November will be great, the boredom will be over.

But after a couple of years horizontal. Is it not possible that the dust falling back down when the system is not on for example, will in time clog up the fans? Anybody who opens there pc's will see how dirty they get. In time that will affect how much they can cool the system down

I keep mine vertical because the internal parts seem to run cooler. As for dust settleing in the vents I use the electronics cleaner from time to time to blow the dust out of the console.

Mine is vertical, mainly because it takes up less space and looks better.

I imagine more heat is lost because of the holes in the top of the console (heat rises, duh) but to be honest it wont be making any difference to your PS3s quality or functionality, just choose what suits you best as the PS3 is pretty hardy and can take quite a few beatings.

I wouldn't stand mine vertically, simply cos it's bound to get more dust inside if you've got it with vent holes facing upwards

I keep it vertical, I heard it has better air circulation that way, and the fan is blowing out how could dust get it? if theres people over i turn it on its side so it doesnt fall over, it doesnt really matter actually

sounds like to me, the best position would be diagonal... less dust inside and cooler at the sametime...

or perhaps I should keep the ps3 afloat like in those commercials...

I too originally had it horizontal to keep the dust out of the vents. But when I had to make more room, I had to put it vertical. But I then thought about it and my room isn't very dusty at all thank goodness. I've had my computer for 3 years and have never cleaned it out once and it still looks really clean on the inside... so I'm not to worried about dust and the PS3 anymore. Now my basement is INSANELY DUSTY and I would definitely put it horizontal if it was down there... wait I take that back... I'd never put it down there... the dust is so bad it would be like a death sentence. :P
