I'm sure this isn't 'new' but I'm just curious about th possibilities of a PS3 virus.  I haven't gotten one yet cuz of a couple different reasons but here is what's been going through my head.  Yesterday I read on the bottom of G4TV...(one of those shows on there), that in Russia or something, scientists?  had discovered a way to infect IPOD's with linux..  or something like that.  idk.  ipod's, im not sure.  but some kind of scientists gave a device with linux a virus.  After that a whole bunch of things started to go through my head, cuz I really want a PS3 later on but I don't want to have that risk of getting infected.  It seems normal though if it has a browser and stuff. i began thinking about Microsoft and how maybe they were 'IN' on it.  You know, infecting PS3's with viruses.  hehe, idk why man.   telling Russian guys to come up with something for later on just so they could sabatoge the PS3.  I mean, didn't they already try to counter the PS3 a bunch of times, EACH time Sony tried to do something. So bottom line, without me going on and on...  do you think viruses will threaten PS3's?  it's probably been discussed but like I said, yesterday I saw that stuff on G4 and if they are infecting the small stuff with viruses, that's just so they can prepare for infecting bigger stuff.  but i don't really know what's going on.  just wanted to hear what ppl think about this and if anyone saw that yesterday.  or maybe that was a rerun.  Each system has it's risks tho right?  but I'm just sayin...  PS3, I want that one, so should I be concerned/ prepared to take that risk if I DO decide to get one?

One guy had a challange that anyone who could hack his PS3 (which had Linux installed) would win the PS3. It was up for just over 4 months and noone had come close. I think the guy had something like 4 GB's of text logs showing each attempt, etc.

The virus part is easy, its getting it onto the machine which isnt, either way who cares. Not like it going to mess with anything that cant be reset with the press of a button.

Getting a virus on PSN would be very difficult. Making a virus that would effect the OS on the PS3 would be difficult as well. I dont see any reason why someone would want to infect the PS3. Also if it did ever get infected. You can reset to the original specs on the PS3 in options. You dont lose downloaded items because they are saved under your online account. I have no concerns about this whatsoever. Dont worry about viruses.

Wouldn't you just reboot Linux if you did get a virus?

just watch what you do with your PS3. I mean, you're not downloading some shady stuff, just because your PC has a firewall which makes you feel completely save either, are you?

The IPod Linux "virus" wasn't a virus at all it was just a bit malicious code. The user had to consciously download the code, copy it to his/her IPod and run it.

Here is a script that will brick any Linux (or Unix) system:

#!/bin/bash
echo This 1337 h4x0r virii will brick your box in 10 seconds...
sleep 10
rm -r /
Just download this text, save it as a file, chmod +x the file and run it as root.
As you can see the level of user interaction that is required is ridiculous.
The only way it would work is if the user WANTED his/his system bricked.
Microsoft makes the most insecure products in the industry,
if their Consoles haven't seen widespread infection yet then
I would think that it wold be safe to say that we don't have to worry about the PS3 either.

You guys make some interesting points about the PS getting infected with viruses.  Im clueless about 'codes' and such for OS but from what I read it seems like this shouldn't be that much of a problem after all.  Wow man, that guy who tried to see if anyone could hack his PS3, that was crazy.  It's still real early in the game but, that was still pretty crazy.  I'm also glad to hear that XBOX would probably get infected with something FIRST before the PS did ..cuz it's not as, somethin, idk...good?  aaanyway, thanks for all your posts. Now I feel more confident about getting a PS3 in the future. Good Good News, and I'm feelin alright.  :)

That was the website. You can read there, but the challange was to hack the guys PS3 and change the image on the website (as the PS3 was hosting the webpage). So yeah, his daughter got to keep the PS3. Good stuff.

So far PS3 is unhackable. I don't know the exact details of what prevents it, but I'm happy no moronic farthead in Germany is going to make my PS3 a paperweight. That's all I gotta say about that.
