Im considering buying a PS3 but my LCD tv only reaches 1080i, not 1080p. Is there any real difference between the two?

720p is better then 1080i on games, but 1080p looks freakin sweet on a tv 46inch or bigger, anything smaller and you wont really notice much of a difference.

1080i will be fine, people take this resolution too much to heart its not really the most important part to having our game look good, if your tv has a good contrast ratio and quick response time i hear like 8ms is good then you should be good

Currently 1080i is only good if your tv supports 720p as well.  There have been a ton of good games that were released with 720p support but not 1080i.  If you dont have 720p support these games get downscaled to a lousy 480p.  There are a ton of people including myself that are angry about this problem.  Sony hasn't even acknowledged it to the public.

So basically if you have a 480p/1080i tv, expect to play the majority of the current games in the same resolution as a Wii/PS2/Xbox.... 480p.

Well since the topic creator mentioned that he has an LCD TV this means he is more than likely dealing with a 720p resolution, so his question has been answered. Don't even worry about 1080i.

Exactly, it's not such a big deal. Since i don't have a game that supports more than 720p (Resistance) i can't say anything about the PS3, but i play Gears on my Xbox in 1080i, and it's very nice. I swapped between 720p and 1080i (on a 42" plasma), and honestly, i couldn't see any difference, I think you'll have to go 50" plus to notice anything
