I here that Sony is going to take the emotion engine chip out of future manufactured ps3's for less production cost, or something.  Does this mean I won't be able to play ps2 games on the ps3 anymore?

No but you will have to look at a compatibility list to see if it will work.  Pal ps3's with the chip set removed play about 75% of the ps2 games right now compared to 98% for the US ps3s.

No, don't worry about PS2 games. I have a European PS3 and it plays all my PS2 games. It's done via emulation, and the emulator is being updated with every firmware update.

Woo... I'm so glad I got mine when I did though, probably one of the last shipments available with the emotion engine. Yeah, nw it plays PS2 and PS1 games through emulation, like the 360, except Sony has done a much better job with it.

Without the chip, it only means that there are less PS2 games can be played on or compatible with a PS3 INITIALLY. Sony's doing this to cut down the costs of PS3 production, so instead of putting a chip, they wrote a program that emulates the functions of the Emotion Engine chip. However, even the early production of PS3s with the chip can't run all PS2 games and it can all be fixed with a simple firmware update, so don't stress too much about it!

Yes it means the PS2 games run off PS3 emulation instead of the hardware...

Heres the http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/ backwards compatibility list which isnt very accurate, cause some of the games I've tried on that list don't even work.

Most likely yes, especially with the 80GB PS3 coming out, but, if I remember reading correctly, near or the same price as the 60GB due to removing the EE.

Link?

On topic, emulation sounds good as long as I can play RE4, MGS3 Subsistence, GOW2, and SF Anniversary.  The 360's bc emulator was good imho, although the only games I play were Halo 2 and NGB. :P

It's only coming out in Korea and it will be the only one available there. They have no plans on bringing it to the US or other territories.

Where did you read that the 80gb will be released in N.A or EU?

At the moment is scheduled for release only in Korea.

Just looking around the internet, plenty of sources say that it will indeed be coming to the US. Source Most sites say this summer, although nothing is official.

Sony will never lower there quality. These threads are started from other sources that just are hoping for something to happen that would lower the quality Sony has set. Actually anything Sony does is a actually a very nice improvment.

What all this means is that when they finally get it tweaked the way they want it, they will have firmware that disables the hardware so all PS3s run from the emulator.

I'm glad I got an early PS3.  I think in the long run, having the EE chip will be beneficial.  I guess we'll see.

I do want to defend the 360's emulation.  I think they've actually done a pretty good job.  I've got a stack of great Xbox games that work flawlessly on my 360.  In fact, the 360 even renders, all or maybe just some, Xbox games in 720p.  So, there aren't the jaggies in games like Halo like in PS2 games.

While I agree that the EE is definitely good, in the long run we will all be playing PS3 games, and unless you have a PS2 game that does not work right now that you would like to play in months or years time from now, then the EE does not really matter too much.
