We just got a new tv a few hours ago. Im trying to set up me PS3 so that it will display in HD. We were using a Standard Def TV before, but the TV we have now can Display in 720p, but whenever I switch out of 480i, the screen goes blank, and it wont apply the resoultion change. Any idea whats going on?

leave the ps3 on 480i

plug in new t.v

when the ps3 is off

hold the power button for 10 seconds or so, you should hear 2 beeps and by doing this it tells the ps3 to automatically do the best settings

try it.

you are probably still using the composite cables (yellow, white, red) that came with it.

You will need either component (dark red, blue, green, white, light red) or hdmi cable.

be careful when buying a HDMI cable....some places are just a huge ripe off. Best buy doesnt have good prices on HDMI cables (when i was there at least) Kmart had a good price. But hey if its not an issue spend up :D

You may not have the correct cables needed to make the changes. Your going to need the component (which cost somewhere around $20.00 for the Sony brand) or a HDMI cable that varies a great deal in price from one retailer to the other and the brand doesn't make a difference with these cables (the more expensive cables will not deliver any better than the cheaper ones).

So why does my ps3 randomly change the resolution every time I load a game?

Yes, I have an hdmi cable. My tv is a vizio galleria 1080p. It seriously seems random.. sometimes 480,720 or 1080. never 1080i though... It's a pain in my f'n A to restart games until they randomly pop up in 1080 instead of 480.

not all games support 1080p. If the game supports 1080i, it will switch to that resolution when you play the game. If the game is only 720p, then it will switch to 720p when starting the game. The back of the box tells you what resolutions it supports.

As for randomily picking a resolution, it shouldn't be doing that.

There may be a problem with the TV's hardware or software.

that's what I was thinking. I figure he's using the cables that came with his ps3, which only go up to 480i.

Just get the HDMI cable because you can even use it for the sound on your TV and later if you happen to get a surround sound system that supports HDMI audio and HDMI out put for video then you will have a lot less cables to deal with. And HDMI supports both true HD audio and video in the end.

You have to use either an HDMI or Component cable.
