Chances are a 40 gig. Theres been some troubles. Call sony. No point in asking us to fix your system. TO recommend something, try your other games or dvds and see if they work. If they do, its probly the game. Rentals are usually in band condition from the jerks that dont care about stuff thats not theres.

Actually, its 40gb's in general that are having the DRE's. Maybe some 60gb's, but I only know of one that has had the problem (bioshockownz').
So last night I go out and rent Army of Two, played it with my friend in co-op for about an hour and it froze. We waited awhile to see if it would unfreeze, eventually using the PS button to shutdown the system. Turn it back on, but Ao2 back in and it won't play the disc. In the upper right corner of the screen. theres a little circle dealio that says its "reading" the disc, but it won't start. It's not the disc either, because it won't play a brand new, out of the box Blu Ray Appleseed: Exmachina, also won't play very old DVD Suicide Club. Anyone knows any way to fix this, help would be appreciated. :)Graevus00the disc drive is fault it happened to me. it a rare problem and it mainly your badluck contact sony and they'll fix it for free. they did with mine

40gb and no this is not as wide spread as people think. very few people get this becuase the problem arises when the PS3 is made at the factory when the BD diode is put in every few PS3's are misplaced which eventually leads PS3 not being able to read anything. from what i heard 40gbs are slighly more susceptible for some reason but still the problem only happen every 1 in 1000 or soHrm, this is gettin pretty common, actually its gettin too common that it makes me nervous :(tabben
Don't be .. it's an electronic and no matter how well they are made to me there is a 50/50 chance it will crap out. That's what warranties are for, and store warranties ..
I have my 60GB since launch, and I don't even vacuum it, and not one problem .. maybe it's luck,
So this is your second system thats died Kaos???

I agree the 60gb are the best one's
however the 40gb's seem to be having problems.
Anyone know about the 80gb's?

there are 2 things that could b rong, your disk could be smugged, or your drive could be failing for your ps3, so contact sony and tell them of your problem.

Yeah, that's in his sig...
Shut down the PS3, clean the disc and try again .. if that doesn't work you will probably have to contact Sony.420Token420
After 37 days of ownership (Played one game for 1/2 hour and watched about 3 blu-ray movies), the PS3 stopped reading discs. I was watching "We Own The Night" on Blu-ray and all of a sudden it froze. I went back to the main menu and tried to read the disc again and got a black screen. Powered down and up and no luck. Formatted no luck. What the heck is going on? Everyone praises these things as not failing and this thing failed much faster than my 360 (kinda sad to talk about benefits in the context of how often they fail). (SIGH) This thing is in mint condition...it's not really fair they'll replace it with a refurb. bacon333
If you just google it:

Looks like a common problem...

I brought my PS3 late last month (March 09), it was sitting pretty next to my 360. I've used it for an impressive 4 hours (max). Whilst playing Little Big Planet, the screen went white, left it for 30 mins to sort itself (having experienced the red-ring of death 3 times on the 360).. It didn't sort itself so powered down using the button on the front of the machine. Turned the PS3 back on and hey presto - no disc's of any sort are being read (although I get the indicator in top-right when I put one in.) I've got the 80GB model, came with Killzone 2 (the box looked pretty). Now sitting in the 4.5 hr system restore queue hoping that it will fix my problem. I think it's hilarious though, my mates raved about the build quality of this console when I told them my 360 woes. The PS3 has crapped out on me in 4 hours playtime and was double the price of the xbox.
same thing happened to me with an 80gig ps3, sometimes the disc appeared in the xmb sometimes did not. i was out of warranty so i cleaned the lens myself and it worked again. if u want to try it check some videos in youtube. if you still have warranty then call sony.
