You shouldn't need specific folders, as the icon for the flash drive icon should show up regardless.
As mentioned, format it as FAT32. I've had this problem with external hard drives, and the type of formatting is usually the problem.
Though, it is odd that a flash drive would experience this problem, but I don't see what else it could be.
The icon for the flash drive should show up regardless of the folder name. I have a the same flash drive and the icon shows up but in order to access the files I have to press triangle and open it from the menu. For whatever weird reason if I just press x on it it says there are no folder to open.

That is a folder problem. It is designed to recognize certain folder names, then search those folders for the proper files. If the folder isn't right, it won't find anything.

Technically your right but I still don't have any problem accessing whats' on the drive. My ps3 recognises it when I plug it in. It's just that I have to press triangle and select to open it and all the folders are then visible regardless of the folder names. For whatever reason if I press X to open it it says their are no files. It's just a small inconvenience but I will put a ps3 folder on their if that works better cuz the folders that are on there are the ones that are on their when I bought it such as movies, music, documents etc.
