Technically, yes. As far as the hardware is concerned the PS3 is the Beast when it comes to consoles. It has FREE online multiplayer, Internet browsing and a Blueray Player (Blueray players alone can cost you $400). You get constant hardware updates and you can store media files and network with friends and family with it. The Machine is an excellent piece of Kit.
However....
No backwards compatability with PS2 games. (Unless you have the rare 60gb).
The console selling games are nowhere to be found, Star Wars Battlefront, Ace Combat, Gran Turismo 5 (glad I didn't hold my breath), Baldurs Gate, etc, etc.
Yes there are games that fill the genres of the above but the essence of fun is missing from the PS3 Library.
I'm still raw on Ace Combat being made an XBox Exclusive, also the Grand Theft Auto Expansion is only for Xbox. WTF? These game where introduced to consoles bySony and made sony alot of cash. Thats one kick in the guts for Sony Fans, One Lollipop for Xbox Fans.
Gran Theft Auto IV compared to Gran Theft Auto: San Andreas is 5/10 at best. Xbox fans get a rehashed version. Two Kicks for Sony Fans, Two Lollipops for Xbox Fans.
Performance; I've still not seen a PS3 game look vastly superior to a X360 game. The PS3 has all this fantastic hardware, yet on a 1080 screen you'd never see the difference. Technically PS3 owners have a better machine....but I'm still waiting to be blown away. (COD Modern Warfare comes closet)
Price: Wii = cheaper, X360 = cheaper. The fun factor of the Wii should be illegal.
I've had all of the playstations and am a massive fan of sony. However my PS3 Morale is low and I regret buying the machine, because rather than knowing I have the best overall console, I believe I've been duped because of my product loyalty.
Think very carefully before you make your decision, most of all make sure you get a system that you're going to enjoy the GAMES on. Hope that helps.
The PS3 is well worth over $1000.
You know how much money Sony is losing by charging you less than half of that?
ive been interested in the ps3 for a while but i dont know if its well worth the 400 bucks or sothekeylockyIt has Blu-Ray which makes it worth it. So even if you end up disliking it it still has a purpose.
thats quite a big exaggeration. The PS3 is well worth over $1000.

Its their own fault they are losing money. They have been indecisive on key decisions which cost them exclusives among others, bundled with the always changing SKU's which doesn't portray stability to the average consumer. P.S. Manufacturing Costs came way down sine its debut, so it is costs far less then $1000 to make a single PS3. Is PS3 a good system? Yes, because it has most of the same games as 360 ontop of its own exclusives, and it can play Blu-ray movies. I also like the controller much better. My only complaint is the poor online gaming functionality and lack of downloadable content on key games like Fallout 3 and GTA 4.You know how much money Sony is losing by charging you less than half of that?

Yes, it is well worth it. The more important question is why didn't you buy it sooner?
There's been problems with backwards compatibility with PS2 games so they took out the option unfortunately. I for one would be more than happy to deal with some issues to have it back. Also considering the price of the parts you are more than getting a good deal. Blu-ray? $300 bucks at best. Wireless music player? $40 at best. Online game play? Free. 80GB HDD? $50. Broadband Cell Engine? There's only one supercomputer, and no homecomputers or servers, that use it. While the PS3 isn't as competitive with number of games it has lasting ability like the PS2. You can update the HDD for more memory storage up to 1TB and maybe more. You can add chained USB HDD's. And you won't find a chip as powerful as the Broadband Cell Engine for personal use for likely another five or seven years.
As for quality of games. The first few years that the PS2 was out it didn't have games any better than the Xbox and much less choice. But the PS2 well outlasted the Xbox and is still being developed for. Square is releasing FF XIII which is supposed to push the graphical envelope on the PS3 and is being heavily dumbed down for Xbox 360. Gran Turismo 5 (rumoured to be released in december) should also do a fair job of pushing the systems envelope provided it's not just a copy of Prologue with more cars and tracks.
So why didn't any of us buy it sooner?
ive been interested in the ps3 for a while but i dont know if its well worth the 400 bucks or sothekeylockyit's worth every single penny that you'll spend on it.... i myself have spent more than a thousand bucks for my PS3 and games... i'm very much satisfied! an advice i can give you is to be very choosy in picking up games.... do some serious reviews before getting some...
So basically your complaining because Ace Combat is not on the system and because GTA 4 download content is on the 360 although you just said the game was crap. You don't make a lot of sense.
Overall the PS3 is a pretty cool system. It had a slow start, but it has enough of it's own games now to justify the purchase
i bought mine from Craiglist for $300. the ps3 broke 1 month later. the 'breakage' wasnt' really bad, it just wouldn't accept disks, the slot loader f-ed up (but the ps3 still played games and videos off the hard drive just fine).
but i got the ps3 fixed for free under warranty even though i bought it off of craiglist..... how u ask? well, pm for details (i don't want to say publically b/c i might want to use the 'trick' again sometime in the future to get my ps3 fixed again, if it breaks again that is).
The PS3 is well worth over $1000.
thats quite a big exaggeration. [QUOTE="Scianix-Black"]You know how much money Sony is losing by charging you less than half of that?
My only complaint is the poor online gaming functionality. Uh that may be due to the devs servers not the PS3 unless you have a crappy ISP or connection. And what "key" decisions are you talking about? Your post has a lot of holes. Honestly, it's worth the money cause of the capabilities it has. Free online gaming ( you only need an ISP and a PSN account which you can set-up on start up of the console so long as you have it connected to the net ), bluray drivers ( for both the games and movies, which look brilliant on the PS3 and depending on what TV you have ) store media like movies ( downloadable from the PSN store ) photos and music. Unfortunately the 160GB PS3 doesn't have Backwards Compatability unlike the launch 60GB or the older 80GB/MGS4 80GB models but unless you have a PS2 already I wouldn't sweat it. Oh, and you can upgrade the HDD to 500GB so once you eventually run out the 160GB, which shouldn't be anytime soon, you can bump up the space. The games are awesome despite what some people say, cause they're expectations a re way to high to appreciate what devs and pubs are trying to give people. Plus with the roster that's coming out this year it's difficult to understand why you'd want to skip out on a PS3. Overall, get one if you think your going to use it as much as you think you will.[QUOTE="thekeylocky"]ive been interested in the ps3 for a while but i dont know if its well worth the 400 bucks or soJKnaperekDon't care. Too lazy to research = too lazy for me to give you reasons why. Or just stuck up? The reason why people coming asking these questions is because they can't really get this kind of feedback from a website like Best Buy, Walmart or Gamestop cause they basically say the same thing about the system. Yes the response is going to be biased since this is the PS3 part of the forum but that's what he's here for.

Thats a no brainer, YES !!!!!!!!!!!!

I have always wonder why americans complain so much about their prices (not that this is your case, but Ive seen a lot of people complaining about the PS3 price) here in Mexico the current price of the PS3 is 700 dlls, when I bought it the price was 1,000. If they sell the PS3 here at 400 dlls it would sell like hot cakes!
And yes, answering your question, my PS3 costed me 1,000 dlls and it has been well worth it.
sadly for me, no. I purchased the ps3 assuming that it would have as many awesome RPGs as the ps2 did, but in fact the 360 has had a better library of rpgs than the ps3 so far. Hopefully moving forward we get some great rpgs but right now they are few and far between.
But if you like all the other genres of games then go for it.
In my opinion...no. I do own one and play it here and there, but if I knew fully how the PS3 operated BEFORE getting one I would have saved money. See I'm not to pleased with their exclusives. They are only ok in my book, just about EVERY OTHER game I want or enjoy is on or coming to 360 which last gen did not happen and to play all my favorite franchises I needed a PS2 (Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Guitar Hero and so on) this gen that's changed. I purchased a 360 first because Sony too their sweet time to release an overly praised console. Not to mention I'm not a fan of the PS3's clunky online network or XMB setup. The MANDATORY preinstalls (Which take FOREVER) or loading a movie when I want to watch it. Loading movie??? Incredible Hulk on Blu-ray had to LOAD before I watched it...I **** you not.
The whole console feels like bits and pieces of features rather than a whole cohesive, intergrated unit. I'm not a sucker for photo album bull**** or Blu-ray playback (Disgustingly overrated and expensive) or playing decade old "classic" games.
I would not have not purchased it knowing what I know now and could have saved myself 400 bucks.

That's a VERY well thought out reply. I would like to point out tho. Walmart AND my local ShopRite...YES Shoprite offer Blu-ray players as low as $199. So PS3's built in player is starting to become moot, not to mention the media is over hyped. I too believe A LOT of these Sony supporters are duped by brand loyalty Most make claims against other consoles without even owning one. It seems like they get overly excited over ANYTHING PS3 related and speak of it as the reincarnation of Jesus in plastic.

Its the same on both sides.Same as in being duped? If so I agree but Sony fanboys take it to EXTREME levels. The console is NOT what it should be or claimed to be. In fact I pretty much find it useless and this is coming from a SONY supporter in terms of PSone, PS2, PSP AND their cameras (I have a digtal camera and handicam) I was excited when PS3 was announced and my interest started fading while the time passed and I found myself not wanting the console as the games I REALLY wanted were becoming multiplat. I vowed NOT to get one until MGS4 came out. Got one and now regret it. It's utterly useless now and I wish I had my 400 bucks back.

Hmmm.. First off I rented and watched HULK on BR and DO NOT recall an install, however I do recall the loading of online features for the disc which took all of 15 seconds. Now network issues would cause a long delay. As for the bits and pieces well, those are updates adding new features and I can understand the opinion of not liking them however I welcome all those little features which SONY continually builds upon. Clunky online? I've not had any issues with the online portion nor any lag fests when playing 30 vs 30 in R2, which brings me back to the comment on the HULK movie. As for mandatory pre installs well again a matter of opinion but I prefer to wait a few minunites rather than be plagued with constant 2 to 3 second delays while accually playing. At any rate I don't think the TC is choosing between different consoles so I'll refrain from creating a system war.
