so my ps3 is way out of warranty so i am aware i have no other choice but to pay the 150 to sony for a new one, or go get a new one from the store so do not reccomend that but, a while back my ps3 said cannot find correct hard disk so i went out and i bought myself a 500 gb SATA hdd Seagate MOMENTUS and threw it in thinking it would fix the problem and it did !!! then about a week or two later when i went to turn on my system BAM three beeps and the YELLOW LIGHT:( !!!!!! has anyone else had this happen..im curious was the ps3 broken before i put the new hdd in it or did the 500 gb drive cause the ps3 to take a crash ?

i think the YLOD issue can relate to a range of faults with the PS3 its basically saying there is a serious hardware issue which can range from HDD failure to solder bridging on the M/B

no it was 5400, and i would kill for a working ps3 free of charge...when i called sony they said i would have to pay the 150 though. i wish i could buy a working ps3 w/o the hard drives though, i mean i payed $100 for the 500gb so im going to throw it in my ps3 if i have the ability to do so.

You can fix ylod yourself for free, I did. and the 500GB HDD had nothing to do with it. ...trust me.

mine was a 40gb, 2usb i got it like a week before COD4 came out so late 2007, FROM CIRCUIT CITY no less haha what luck, but to be honest i treated my ps3 like crap left it on for days on end(on at least 8 hours a day for), powered down while hdd was running or even while it was saving often, picked it up and moved it while playing games, used it in my garage for parties then back inside, was always covered in dust and often felt over heated but to play it like i did and have it just break a few weeks back i dont really think i can complain, it just saddens me i have barely scratched the surface on demon soul's and have lost all modern warfare 2 skills i had(tried playing at a friends the other day and it was ugly) but if their is a way around paying for a new/refurb ps3 with money that i dont really have i am willing to attempt it

well this is what i did to get mine replaced for free. i sent a strongly worded email to sony ireland basicly saying "how could you sell this machine for €600 at the time, and nearly 2 years later its broken?? WTF??" i was very, very mad when typeing that email. i **** you not... this worked for me. sent my ps3 in the post and then got a refurb in 3 days. if you don't still believe me i can post the emails if ye want..

Did your refurbished ps3 look like the orginal one? (never had a refurbished piece of hardware before), or did it look like it had patchwork?

personally, when i took it out of the box i had to peel of a protect plastic layer to reveal a shiny never been touched PS3. no patchyness at all! although i have heard of storys over the internet that ppl have gotten patchy and sratched plastic cover. but i did notice that an extra fan kicked in on my refrub after a while. kinda noisey but not much to annoy me, i'm quite easy going. the PS3 i got back looked the exact same as my ole 60gb, b/c, 4usb slot, phat Ps3.

The YLOD is defo not to do with HDD failure, it to do with the fan and heat sink/compound deep inside the PS3. It can easily be fixed yourself which i did for sometime until another issue came about.

see the thing is that the ylod really has to do with a power core in the system. when mine went out i made sony tell me what it had to do with. she rep told me that the power pack has a flaw were it will cause the system to over heat and they have to replace that, of corse they dont do that they just send a new system to you. im sure there is other issues there.

Well when i repaired mine i didn't have to replace that, so that's not the issue.

the YLOD could be a number of issues. the only thing we know is that when the playstation gets a serious error it just goes yellow lighted.
