so how does the PS3 blu-ray player match up to other standalones on the market? The only Blu-Ray movies i have watched have been Casino Royal and 300. And was wondering if there were any other players out there that might be considered "better"

I am sure there might be, but none of them come with the ability to upgrade firmware on the fly like the PS3, and probably cost upwards of $1500.  I would also bet it's a top 5 BR player, and only $400.

The best I can think of are the Samsung 1400 and the ps3. I would buy the samsung only because it can send DTS-MA HD signal via bitstream while the ps3 can't still. But the ps3 is able to send DD TrueHD via bitstream. If you don't care about true sound, ps3 is the best.

Edit: and stand alone players are able to update via firmware.

Essentially they are the same, difference is for bitstream the player sends the full signal to the receiver to decode. linear pcm, the player decodes the sound.

At the moment the PS3 Blue Ray player is one of the top quality ones on the market. Of course the time goes by newer versions of the player will arrive.

The updates have been issued and will continue to do so as new features though "PS3 firm updates".

Every piece of hardware that you buy with time gets older, that's how technology works.

There is a nice advantage to blue-tooth technology when it comes to PS3 blue-ray. I can virtually point out my remote to any direction possible and still it will operate. There are no line of sight restrictions whatsoever. ^_^

At 399$ it is absolutely a steal with the quality of the player. Updates are done via firm update so there is nothing to fear with new features.

Bitstream and PCM make a difference depending on what your receiver can do.

If you have a new receiver, then you may want to use bitstream.

The PS3 can be considered a high end Blu-Ray player and with firmware updates the features of the Blu-Ray can just about keep up with the inhancements over the years.
