Hey when does anyone expect the PS4 to come out. Because I just got a PS3 like 4 weeks ago and I don't really want a new PS4 coming out until atleast 2011 or 2012.

I think this generation might be the longest yet, because development costs were all higher, and PS3 has had a slow start, and Sony plan for it to be a 10 year lifespan of a console.
I know (from wiki) PlayStation came out Japan in Dec 1994, North America and Europe in Sep 1995, it cost $299 on launch day, ceased production in 2006.
PS2 was announced in 1999, and launched in 2000 in Japan, but there were manufacturing problems. PS2 is still on sale today, and probably will stay in production longer than PS (2012 ? ).
PS3 was launched Nov 2006 in Japan and North America, and March 2007 in Europe, plus there were manufacturing difficulties. As it stands, PS3's sales growth rate is higher than PS2's for the same period of time (take from that whatever you want). I expect PS3 to stay alive for as long or longer than PS2, (probably be in production till at least 2018 ) because the money invested in it is a much larger amount.
PS4 will (if Sony keeps doing these kinds of increments in technology) cost even more to make, and will probably have holographic disc format, and real-time raytracing graphics hardware. If history serves as a good indicator, PS4 will be expected to come out about 5-6 years into the PS3's life, but because of the much bigger leap in technology, I think it will be more like 8-9 years. I don't think they will be 'doing a microsoft' and releasing a new console 3 years later, no way. I think developers still have a lot to learn about the Cell Broadband Engine, and all the tricks it can do before they start working on something completely different. Who knows, by then molecular computing or optical computing might be coming to the mainstream and there could be a revolutionary change in technology that makes the PS4 take even longer to come out.

Too much thought. I would say 2013....but the world is supposed to end in 2012 or 2013.

I agree with this 100%. The PS3 will be around for a long time and with the way Sony releases new consoles if and when the PS4 is released there will be some other type of media storage other than Blu-Ray.

what he said^..i wouldnt put much thought into the future (life or gaming wise)...end of the world is near, but i will be doing all my ps3 gaming in my bomb shelter =)
Looks like you people forgot all about this. PS4 will most likely be reaveled in 2014, when Its "PS 20 Year Anniversary".TacticityI agree, PS4 should be released on 2014 to coincide with the 20th anniversay of Playstation
The ps3 was designed to have a 10 year shelf life, so if thats true, your looking around 2016 tbh, but releasitically, id knock a few years off, so probably 2012-13ish.chimera1984
The PS1 laster 10 years, the PS2 will last 10 years. The 10 year thing means nothing actually. The console will be on for 7 years total, as the PS2, and during the 6-7 year we will see the new one on the market, as usual.
I think they should call it something else >__>ReaperV7
I don't think so. PS4 looks good on paper. Now PS5...just ewww.
You would think the game industry would finally hit a point where they couldnt take it anywhere else... so there has to be a wave of consoles that will finally become the final console gen. I mean i guess until you can get every second out of a game and gameplay to look exactly like or freaking close to real life is where it will finally come to the final gen.

We'll probably never see that though, because things that incredibly life-like would take insane amounts of coding.
I think graphics will just get better and better, then smaller and smaller.
Soon we'll be playing PS3 quality graphics on PSP sized screens.

True true...Yeah ive taken some programming classes and let me tell ya... I have so much respect to those in the game industry that program for games. Programming is insane and simple tasks for me were hard. Imagine creating a life like game....thousands upon thousands upon thousands of code...
Remarkable, understanding what it takes to make a game...makes you apprecieate it so much more.

I agree with all the statements here. PS3 has amazing capabilities. It is not a system which is based on what it has in it, most of the parts can be upgraded and it supports external hardware. The PS3's update system for its OS and for games also makes its life more durable and creates a nearly infinite supply of ideas and coding which can be implimented. I think that the use of updates to the PS3's software using the internet will increase its life span as new revolutionary coding ideas and techniques which increase as time goes on will keep the PS3 up to date with the times.
I hope this makes sense :o
And whats this end of the world thing? Wtf?!
Hiyoal :D
Where's the 2016 option?Scianix-Black
That is because Sony will not wait that long to release their next console, Sony said they will support the PS3 for 10 years just like the PS1 once was & the PS2 right now still being suppoted by Sony.
