Being that Arkham City and Uncharted 3 will be out this year, and they're both graphically amazing. I'm just curious what do you think will happen about four years into the next console generation when we once again get the inevitable "remasters" of current gen blockbusters.

Unlike the leap from the PS2 era to the PS3, we're reaching a point where graphics are technically 'good enough' being that 720p can still hang in 5-6 years. I'd almost consider that going from DVD to Blu-Ray in terms of how much they can bump up graphics in a remake. Sure it will look good, but you won't have that extreme wow factor anymore because current graphics will still pass in the next gen.

So outside of likely bumping the resolution to 1080p and 5.1, and 3D, what more do you think they can do to the PS4 Uncharted Collection and Arkham Collections, for example? Is a fresh coat of HD paint still going to work for HD remakes next gen?

As Capcom has proven with it's halfassed "HD" re-releases of Resident Evil 4 and Veronica. Remasters are the new way to make a quick buck.

Doubtful. PS2 games get HD collections because they look like crap in standard def on HDTVs, the same can't be said for current gen games that look fine in 720p 30fps.

That's the point I'm arguing. Graphics at this point are good enough. But as we've seen as of late, companies are using HD collections for a quick profit and they will continue at some point in the next generation. Why wouldn't they? People are obviously going to want to play the yet unreleased Grand Theft Auto 5 in 1080p with 60fps on the PS4 in some future GTA collection. I'm not against the remasters, if they're actually work put into them instead of just up scaling the graphics. I'm just curious how much more will they be able to improve current games with next gen tech. Of course, no one knows at this point since the systems obviously aren't out. I'm just curious on ideas of how Uncharted 3 will look as part of a collection in 4-5 years.

I was just wondering today if a game like Bioshock would stand the test of time graphically. Could Bioshock ever become an eyesore? I think so as future tech will produce textures with incredible detail. Bioshock would come off looking blurry or smuggy by comparison. Heck, I never would have thought Oblivion could ever be outdated as it was just gorgeous when it came out, but the character models are awful by today's standards.

Seems unlikely to me, but you never know. I think this generation is going to burn out the remake cash cow.

I can't imagine any publisher spending money to upgrade a game from 720 to 1080. You can't even notice that unless you've got a fairly large TV.

personally, i still think resident evil 4 on last generation hardware looks spectacular with its grimy textures and there are so many others that still look great to this day. however, general public perceptions move on with hardware leaps and i think thats what will happen with even our currently lauded ps3 graphics. i expect bioshock to always look great thanks to what the graphics mean rather than what they merely depict, but that depiction element is still going to show age on new hardware as 1080p and better lighting, animations, effects, and all that become standard (its a tangent, but the nature of the hardware like whether or not its portable also comes into play). thats where the market for remakes is going to be.
