I was just thinking the other day how everytime MS boasts the fact that they have 6 million live users. However, if you look at it this way every PS3 user is automatically a PSN one too cause you have to register to get updates. Now, with broadband becoming a household thing soon every single console will be in a sense "LIVE". So that way in a few years the PS3 online community could eclipse live and force developers to make it the prefered online console especially since MS requires both a hard-drive and live account to join online gaming. This could really help Sony cause they have online setup right out of the box. Now the only downside is that MS is pouring in mountains cash with live. Sony could eventually counter that with targeted ads and such and if they can use the support from their music labels and hollywood studios to get exclusive content on the PS3. People wait and see the playing field is being leveled as we speak.

BTW I own both consoles before i get flamed.

There are thousands upon thousands of ps3 owners without broadband. Broadband is not in every home and wont be for quite awhile. I have no idea how these people "update" their ps3, or if they even need to. Yes, psn does have the potential to reach more users in some sense, but remember, xbox Live Silver is also available for free to everyone....you can still access many Live features for free.

The primary appeal and purpose of networked consoles is multiplayer which isn't free on Silver.

True.

I have so many friends that play games offline cause either they don't know what online gaming is like or don't the kind of money to pay for Live. Many have told me they rather get a new game with the 50 bucks which MS expects everyone to dish out. To me the real potential of PS3 is that it could introduce online gaming to so many people out there especially the casual gamers. Just the other day I was playing RFOM and my cousin who is 16 came over to my house and asked who am I playing against? Well cut the story short I showed him around and a few weeks later he went out bought a PS3 so now we both kick it on RFOM. That is the type stuff Sony could really do, Yes Live is awesome and my personal choice but when it comes to the un-informed gamer so many just back away from online cause they think its gonna cost them money.

As for broadband its already reached 50% of households in the U.S and U.K

http://news.cnet.com/2110-1034_3-6160422.html

thats a pretty good chunk of the pie and will only grow from here on. Think, if you can afford a PS3 then you probably can do with broadband.

Why should he get flamed? This is the PS3 Forum and he makes a valid point of view.

I'm pretty sure this is incorrect. I don't own a PS3 yet so I can't say for sure but I'm guessing that you could take your PS3 out of the box, plug it in and play for 10 years without ever having to connect it to the internet and it would be just fine. Sony would be absolutely out of their minds (as would any other console maker) to REQUIRE that you hook up your console to the internet just to be able to get it's basic functionality to work. As for required updates to the firmware w/o connecting to the internet, Sony can just require that any game coming out after the firmware update include the update on the disc in some kind of autoexec format so that the console gets updated. Correct me if I'm wrong but the PS3 does not REQUIRE that you ever hook it up to the internet does it?

Lots of PS3 owners don't go online... people that use it primarily as a Blue Ray drive, foh' example. And a lot of place in the world have incredibly low broadband saturation... almost nobody has it in some countries. The CEO of Netflix just joined the board at Microsoft, so most likely there will be a Windows/360 initiative to rent moveies, HD and otherwise, over the 360. Considering Netflix's catalogue, that's going to present some tough competition for Sony. MS may start selling 360's just so people can use this feature, just as some (few) people got PS3's just to watch Blue Ray movies. What will that do to the playing field?

Correct me if I'm wrong but the PS3 does not REQUIRE that you ever hook it up to the internet does it?

The updates are a must if your planing on getting the most out of your especially full backward support cause a majority of the games require these updates. Same goes with full HD support and etc. There are so many things the firmware updates are doing that it is am essential part of the system.

Anyway my point is let's if Sony sell's 10 mil by the end of 2007 and half of those users have broadband then thats about 5 million not bad. Also I think a lot of people who currently own a PS3 are not using PSN is because they're aren't many games to begin with besides RFOM, OBlivion and Motorstorm. Once games like Warhawk that are custom tailored for online only hit the market, you'll see a large increase in the number of users. My projection is that in a year or two, Sony's community will be much larger than Live and thus will lead to more devs to focus on it as the prefered online console. See Live is sort of an exclusive group like a country club where you have to pay for membership dues. However, Sony's model really fits the average gamers budget and lifestyle so I expect tremendous growth in few years. Live will continue to grow but I doubt that it will ever reach the masses especially all these young kids who don't have a big budget.

As long as the head honcho behind Netflix doesn't sign an exclusive deal with Microsoft to release movies on xbox live, I don't see how that would hurt Sony. To me it makes no sense to do that, when they can make even more money, by releasing movies on the PSN as well. We all know that that your going to be able to download things like movies and tv shows in the future on the PSN.

yeah, I agree with what you say and I agree with the comments that loads of PS3 users dont ahve broadband.. even more who don't have HD tvs! I mean singing up with the PS3 means you're serious about gaming, for me the biggest fun about the PS3 is the online capabilities and not too mention its fantastic visuals on an HD tv (i only 720p though which is more then enough to enjoy it fully).

Plus Sony could always workout a deal with all the movie studio's that have, and will in the future release movies on bluray, to make those same movies available for download on the PSN.

Home will already make devs want to develop for PS3 considering Home is a huge source of advertising for these devs or could be a huge source depending on how good Home turns out to be.
