In an interview with Financial Times, Sony chief executive Sir Howard Stringer briefly mentioned plans for PlayStation Network to carry music and video downloads, possibly in early 2008: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=29614

Has anyone heard more details regarding these plans? Will PSN begin selling music files, movies, and TV shows in a fashion similar to iTunes?

If so, I wonder if XBL will consider allowing users to pay a little more to purchase movies rather than "rent" them. Could they possibly incorporate Zune Marketplace in XBL to counter Sony's move in offering music files?

I haven't heard any particulars on the subject, but Sony had this in mind from the beginning, as movie and music sales were mentioned as eventual goals for the PSN back before the PS3 launch. Good to see them keeping the big picture in mind and finally realizing the potential for the PSN.

mp3s? I hope not, id like to think Sony would use an audio format that hasnt been out of date since the 90s.

eventually they wil... they recently shut down their connect service which was their itunes sorta..... I believe they are trying to get all branches of SONY Corp to pitch in because they have the most in house talent available to console companies... MS and N dont have their own music and movie companies...lol.....

This is part of their strategy. I think it's a good idea.

Sounds good. I'll be needing a larger harddrive.

it would be a good idea. sony music and sony pictures are REALLY big. i dont think Microsoft could compete against sonys media capabilities.
