Sony let out details about a new console they are planning on releasing this year before christmas.

In an unanticipated move, Sony have announced details on their next portable gaming console in its PlayStation® Portable range, dubbed PSP-4000.

In a statement at a recent press conference, SCEE president David Reeves announced the decision for the hardware update.

What's unusual about this move is that it follows the release of Sony's new console, the PSP-3000, which hit the shelves less than a month ago. Speculators believe that this sooner than expected update was made by Sony in an attempt to give it a competitive advantage over Nintendo's new DSi.

Continue for details...

Details on this new model were sketchy however. Reeves announced that the new model is expected to be available before Christmas this year, but the price had yet to be finalized. The new model builds on the PSP-2000's "slim and lite" design, and the PSP-3000's improved screen and built-in microphone, and adds an improved processing unit.

Sony announced details on making PlayStation® 2 games available for download via its PlayStation® Store, which could then be transferred to and played on the PSP-4000.

Critics of the PSPTM say that the system's main weakness is it's lack of quality games, and some believe that Sony is relying on the strength and popularity of its aging console to improve the sales of its current generation systems, the PlayStation® Portable and PlayStation® 3.

It wont be 4k, in order for it to be that, it would have to have new motherboards, new features and blah blah, they pulled all the new 3k's to fix them and then they will soon resell them, as like 3004 if anything, just for a quick simple hardware update.

EDIT: "Sony announced details on making PlayStation® 2 games available for download via its PlayStation® Store, which could then be transferred to and played on the PSP-4000."

Instantly impossible.

Every time I see an article about a new psp I search the webpage for the key terms "Right analog stick" If they aren't there I'm not interested in anything else.

Atleast put in something for discussion.

How impossible is putting PS2 games on the PSN and then downloading them? Whats the capacity of a DVD.. 4.5gbs or something?

Some of the video's and demo's we download off the network are already 1-2gb's in size.. so i think it's very feasible to do PS2 games.

I won't believe it until I see it. The PSP-3000 just got released; why would they introduce a new one so soon? Also, as far as PS2 titles on the PSP are concerned, that won't happen until the PSP2 at the soonest. First off, it's not realistic to expect a second analog nub (and have them both clickable) along with an extra set of shoulder buttons and making all the digital buttons analog (pressure-sensitive like on the Dual Shock 2) before what amounts to a new hardware platform to develop on, all of which are going to be needed to play PS2 titles properly. (The PS1 worked out to a degree because it didn't have analog sticks to begin with; they released the Dual Shock later in its life. I don't think that owners of the original, thumbstick-less pads were pleased with having to buy new pads to play newer games like Ape Escape that required them. Do you want the same problem happening with the PSP?) Second, the PS2 is quite difficult to emulate. Sony might get around that by introducing some hardware features in the PSP2 that allows it to run some PS2 code natively rather than emulating it all, though that could cost valuable space for other components inside the device. They'll probably combine it with an emulator that's more efficient and reliable than those made by hobbyist coders. (For instance, I don't think that anyone would have expected the PSP to be powerful enough to emulate something like the PS1 until Sony provided their own emulator in the firmware for use with downloadable classic PS1 titles sold over the PSN.) Also, as somebody mentioned, PS2 games are stored on DVDs, which hold around 4.5 GB of storage. If the PS2 has any dual-layer DVD games, you can double that figure. This normally wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for Sony's insistence on their proprietary and expensive Memory Stick format; a 16 GB card alone can cost roughly 100 US$ if not more as of right now, and you can multiply that several times over depending on how many PS2 games you want to buy off of the PSN!

Sure I'll believe it when I see it or hear more, but what's funny is how many angry little 3K fanboys there will be if this actually does go down.

It might get crazy..

ommm hello... the gfx for the ps2 is way better then psp's so how would psp run it? and yes game sizes are a problem, not a lot of people have 4gb+ memory cards, so that would also affect sales,

There are so many reason why this is untrue. First of all this would be extremely bad marketing-Sony would lose a lot of profit. Secondly an improved processor would put all our psp's in the drain causing them to be outdated( I mean really ps2 games-you would need a second analog nub, l3 and r3 and r2, l2 and i probably wouldn't want to spend my money on a game that i own and already beat a long time ago on a system that i also own). It defeats the prupose of creating new games for the psp let alone exclusive ones. Finally, i honestly doubt Sony would release a completely new psp out of the blue right after releasing one a few weeks ago and it would be stupid to realease it without any type of early advertising at all.

I just read the article, and in the end this came up :

"For those reading this, this article is a pure work of fiction. Obviously, the user who posted this didn't read that it was fiction and decided to post it on ConsoleSpot.

I repeat, this is fake article written by the admin over at EP.
Thread Locked."

I completey agree with you. I doubt they'd be able to make a new PSP and market it before Christamas after having released one less than a month ago.

And PS2 on PSP would be epic.

They are NOT making a new PSP for Christmas this year. It should be a good while before we see a new PSP.
