I was watching the late local news last night and they had a story about a kid whos psp caught fire in his pocket. They said it burnt his leg and pants and also the case it was in, just wondering if anybody has heard about batteries catching on fire like his. Wonder if it was the new slim or an old one, the news contacted Sony and they claimed they have never heard of this happening but would look into it.

BTW I live in Detroit

Yeah, I read about that online. It's kinda scary, but it's probably because of bad handling.

I don't see how it could of happened. If it was in a case then it's sealing air from fueling the fire so when the psp combusted the flame wouldn't of lasted long enought to burn the case.

This reminds me of that episode of the office about 'office safety', when Michael decides that Toby's office safety instructions suck, and takes over by declaring that one of the biggest dangers in the office is the explosion of computers. They laughed at him then, but look, look to the evidence!

By the way, unless Sony has decided to take over the world (sort of like those evil Japanese in South Park who try to do so by using the chimpokemon... hehe, chimpo), I don't think there is anything to be worried about for other users out there. Seriously though, unless you are tinkering with your battery in ways that would make Solid Snake cry, you should be quite safe.

... my god, two references to television pop culture in one thread, yep, time to get a life.

It can happen to any Li-Ion batteries

here's an explanation, courtesy of How Stuff Works

Hmm... I read the article, and from what I can tell the Lithium Ion battery does not necessary 'explode' per se, but rather, the metal sheeth (if that's what you want to call it) that surrounds the high-energy insides may move around if charged very, very frequently. They liken it to rice cooking in a pot, once the water begins to boil the rice may shift around. So what people need to panic about is whether their rice is holding firm within their battery pack!

I'm lead to believe that this case involved an older PSP Phat, seeing at it would have had more time for the rice to move around with more charges over what may have been several months to a year. In fact, seeing as the kid had it in his pocket, you can also assume that he was quite rough with it, which might have further encouraged the leak which caused the eventual fire. Coupled with the fact that he kept it in his pants (must've been baggy pants, no pants of mine would fit a PSP, that's for sure) caused it to overheat and spark.

Lesson of the day:

Don't be too rough on your lithium ion battery charged electronic device, keep it in a bag and not in your pocket, and don't overboil your rice, cuz it makes it all mushy.

There, scooby friends, this mystery has been solved. Either that, or Sony is trying to... TAKE OVER THE WORLD!
