When my brother and I bought our PSPs, we were looking forward to playing the classics together (Wipeout, Ridge Racer, Tekken, Twisted Metal, etc), and wireless co-op was a big part of the purchase. We have been infuriated several times by the fact that these games only offer competative modes. You can't race together against a full grid, and you can't team up to paint the walls with computer opponents.
Games like Twisted Metal in particular have been completely ruined! It is an all time classic, based PURELY on it's co-op... Which has now been removed.
What further irritates me is the reviews of such games. Now, it must be lovely for the reviewer who clearly has access to online play to sing the praises of online capapability and modes, or condemn games for the lack of such modes... NEWFLASH ! ! ! I know seven people with PSPs, NONE of which have ever played it online! Most people who play online have a larger, more powerful console dedicated to the purpose. Why would you bother with the PSP?
The other day, we both got a copy of Ghost Recon, a game canned by most reviewers. While it is mediocre in single play, this game is stacks of fun in co-op mode. It actually appears as though it was built with that purpose clearly in mind. Previously, we both acquired copies of Syphon Filter, a quality game sure enough, but completely worthless for two players wirelessly linked. Syphon Filter is one of the highest rated games on PSP...
So far, the only games that seem to have been developed specifically with two-player co-op in mind are Killzone Liberation and Ghost Recon. There have been a few others such as Brotherhood of the Blade, Monster Hunter Freedom, etc. But these games have serious gameplay issues and only held our interest for a very limited time.
Don't get me wrong. Reviews are normally pretty accurate where single player is concerned. But some effort should be made to at least TRY the co-op modes. The tragedy here, is that with so many people trashing co-op games for their lack of online options, we are extremely unlikely to be seeing any more made with co-op in mind...
I'm curious how others feel about this situation. Are my brother and I the only PSP owners mourning the lack of quality co-op games?
I would also love to hear what co-op games people have enjoyed co-operatively on PSP.
Rant over...
