I would prefer a PSP-4000. In my opinion the PSP still has alot of ground to cover, and can still compete with upcoming handheld consoles.
A thinner cl@ssic PSP look, with two thumbsticks woulld be amazing. and while I do own a 2000, I am definitely looking to get a new one soon. ((mine went through some abuse :(

Coolyfett would like to point out a few things.

The Devs already know what the system is going to be called. EA, Activision, Square Enix, Disney Interactive etc etc...they are under contract to keep quiet.

If you google enough will will find that some firms have games in development for TITLED games on an Unknown system, and the games are either right before or right after futher 3DS titled games.

Some one in Japan already let it slip the device was called the PSP 4000..then was amediately hushed up. Even gamespot took the story down.

Business contracts wont be broken because no one wants to be sued by Sony. IfCoolyfett was a dev all mhis employees would on notice for immediate termination for revealing anything...even future titles for the unknown system. Gamers can anticipate all they want but these firms aint spilling for a few gamers on gamespot.com.

PSP 4000 or PSP 4G is what it is. Always keep the leak that was quickly hushed up in mind.

PSP4k. The PSP2 seems like it would be a reinvention of the PSPgo, and by continuing the numbered series of the PSP, it would seem that a UMD drive would be a part of the hardware. Although, who's to say that a PSP2 and a PSP4k isn't necessarily the same thing...???

Hardcore Gamers are a funny group lol...We have the PSP 2000 & a PSP 2? that makes no sense to the average consumer. Sony has too be able to separate the systems easily. Calling it a PSP2 only makes sense to the hardcore PSP crowd that already knows the system..PSP 1000 is the PSP1 right? so the PSP 2000 is a PSP1 also right? And the PSP 3000 is a PSP1 right? The PSP Go is a PSP1 right? So we have 4 different PSP1s???? Cmon yall.

Look at the DS GROUP.. you Have DS, DS Lite, DSi & 3DS...did Nintendo call it a DS2??? Noooooo, because techically it is not. They name their devices based on features and styles. The Lite was lighter, the DSi had the eye/camera added, the 3DS will feature 3D. The game cards will be the same size. The 3DS has only 2 drives the SD CARD & game card drives, meaning DS carts & 3DS carts go in the same port.

Calling the next PSP the PSP2 would be a terrible mistake, and create confusion. for the casual consumer.

Why should we need PSP4K if we already have PSP123KGO that already/was available in the market?

It's like camping in the same jungle over and over again.

PSP already sold more than XBOX, XBOX360 and PS3, just because cheaper and bad games by DS out-pass PSP sales, it's not a failure.

It's wise to launch a new sony portable to cater consumers needs with new tech

Because its not refered to as PSP-2000 to casual folk. Thats just the model. Its still the PSP. Now when/if PSP2 comes out, it would make sense to say PSP2-1000, or PSP2-2000.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Sony themselves ever marketed it as the "PSP-2000" or "PSP-3000". If you look at the packaging here in the states it simply says PSP / PlayStation Portable. I know that in the UK they market the 2000 and 3000 as the "PSP Slim & Lite", adding the words "with enhanced screen + built in microphone" to the 3000 box.

Very true, it well could be the same thing. I was mainly refering to a change in generations verses another rehash.

exactly. even to people i know who don't keep track of it know the different psps as. slim or slimmer. or even phat. so PSP2-1000 PSP2-2000 seem like the way to go. IF it were called the PSP2

I dont care what its called as long as its an entirely new psp hardware that has at least the capablilties for better graphics and can compete with other handhelds. I want the next psp to be an upgrade in every way and not like the 3000 to GO, which had the same specs just different features. This one better have upgraded specs as well as more features (dual analog sticks) or im just going to stick with my GO

PSP 4000 just sounds like a small tweaked version of the latest psp. PSP2 but I don't really care what they name it. It could be the psp hot sauce and I still wouldn't mind.

well there is NO guarantee they will make EITHER the psp-4000 or a psp2. so dont hold your breath. I'm really kinda sick of waiting (and reading threads like this in the meanwhile) why cant sony just say what they are doing. Sadly, I'm guessing they will continue to trickle out psp games online and on umd (rarely) and then cut out the umd, then stop releasing games online, then the psp will be dead in a little over a year. a psp2 just doesnt seem like it would make them any money. the DS is the only thing that really sells. psp owners are few and far between really.

No it would not! Its a PSP first. Adding a 2 behind it specifies nothing...it is still a PSP.

Sony should not rehash, according to Coolyfett. It should overall be an all new system with new features and support BC would be awesome though.

Just like adding a 2, to PS2, after the first playstation specified nothing. and the 3 after that... I don't understand your logic here.

Not really sure what difference a name makes, but I do think that if there will be a new PSP coming out, it should probably a new one, maybe backwards-compatible, with better hardware, better graphics, two thumbsticks, etc. UMD compatible, here's hoping.

The OP's question wasn't what to call the next PSP, but if you would rather it be a revision to the existing PSP (PSP-4000) or a successor (PSP2).

The PSP2 could be called the PSP 4000. They just keep the base PSP name and do major upgrades over time.

Coolyfett is in agreement with this idea. Coolyfett may support the Next Sony handheld, but a corny name like PSP2 because a PS2 & PS3 exist is unoriginal & lame. Two things Sony has never been was unoriginal & lame. With handhelds the reboots is still APART of the series. Whatever Sony does they are going AFTER the opposition, they wont do it with a PSP 4000 that only adds a camera to the 3000, they will add many many new features. To the next PSP 4000,If they even think about giving it a cornballistic name, like what people are suggesting, Coolyfett wont upgrade to it. Give it a sexy name and Coolyfett is all in baby.
