You're talking about a pretty advanced thing here.  You need a keyboard and a mouse to load Linux on your PS3.

Read this carefully.

I have no idea.  But I think it would be more difficult.  The PS3 is designed to have Linux sharing the hard drive.

Windows is a x86 (AMD/Intel) and x86-64 operating system.  The PS3 uses the Cell processor, you can't get Windows for Cell.

Fedora Core 5 and Yellow Dog 4 are both very easy to install and very similar. IMO go with Yellow dog unless you have a standard tv, in which case FC5 is better. For video play back i recommend vlc, but remember to get the ppc (power pc) version, and it takes a while to track down all the dependencies BUT it is totally worth it because vlc can play just about anything.

Get yellow dog linux from there web site : http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/ydl/ (you can also find a very good install guide pdf here).

Its linux and therefore its free, as is all the software. I managed to get linux up and running and had never used or seen it before in my life- so it cant be that hard because im rather a block head when it comes to these things. The good news is there is no way you can break your ps3 doing it. If the install goes pear shaped just hold down the power button for 6 seconds and the xmb reloads.

Good luck!
