So I like having things on my hardrive. It makes things really convenient when I'm sick like I am today and don't have to get up to change my game if I want to play something different (or watch something different.)

Now I got a bunch of PSone games on discs, and I was wondering if there was any way to rip them to my hardrive. I don't think this is illegal as long as I have the discs.

Does anyone have any information on this?

I don't think you can on the PS3, but you should be able to. That would be awesome.

I know there's some way you can rip DvDs onto your hardrive, even if it requires going through a PC and transferring the files.

Maybe there's a way to do that?

I guess I wasn't clear.

You can rip PS1 games to an .iso file using pretty much any disc writing program, but I don't think there's any way to get the PS3 to read those files as actual games. That would be great, since I could stick a lot of my old RPGs onto my PS3 and have them show up in the game list.

Ah, I can dream, I guess.

Hopefully Sony will take a cue from M$ and allow you to copy entire games to your HDD. Obviously not PS3 games but PS2 and PSX games should be able to be done.

No, its legal as long as you still have the original disc. If you get rid of the original disc ever you have 24 hours to get rid of the copy.

It's murky, having the iso might fall under fair use, but it might not. I don't think anyone would go after you for it, but it's still questionable.

I'd imagine so, rom sites always have a disclaimer saying if you do not own an original copy of whatever its illegal. Thats what I've based my belief of the law on. As well as there are legal programs to create backup copies of DVDs as long as they are solely back ups. Who knows, I've never seen a definition of the copyright law and I doubt the companies producing these thins would like to clear it up for you in the there FBI warning labels because if stuff was legal they wouldn't let you know they might lose money.

The US PSN store doesn't have Final Fantasy 7-9, Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Megaman Legends and Metal Gear Solid yet. I happen to have those on a disk, and it'd be nice to play them without needing the disc.
