I finally got into the Folding@Home project but I never really understood what it does till today when I finally updated it.

So here is my question.

Do I have to leave my PS3 hooked up to the internet just so Folding@Home can do whatever it does.

Or can I unplug my PS3 from the internet and Folding@Home still work?

My understading is that it has to be on and connected, so as to recieve information and send results back. This is similar to the SETI@home project, whereby the computer ran calculations for data it recieved while it was idle (or more specifically, in screen saver mode). No connection, no data.

So would I still be able to play games while its doing whatever it needs to do, without messing it up?

It needs to be hooked up.

What it does is puts your ps3 in an idle state and donates the power to stanford university for some research.....its really *cough*AWASTEOFYOURLIFE*cough*....i mean its really a wonderful way to give back to the communtiy.....:|

LMAO! So wrong :P You will have to be connected to Stanford University to be able to donate your PS3's core power to them. You are not able to play any games while folding@home but you can listen to music and read some news while folding. Hopefully they add more features so they can get more people to start folding.

Waste of your life? That's a little harsh don't you think. We're talking about cancer research for little to no investment of your time (just what it took to DL the client).

The client doesn't (or at least shouldn't) do anything unless your PS3 is idle. When you're playing a game, folding@home should be sitting in the background waiting for its turn. Until the PS3 goes idle (eg: no one is doing anything) folding just sits twiddling its thumbs, not stealing valuable cycles. Once it is idle, though, and you're connected, it runs calculations and sends the results back to homebase (no personal info though, with any luck). All it costs you is the money associated with the power that is being consumed to keep your PS3 on, which could be a valid arguement.

Yeah, I'll admit the news part was ok, and the music, but otherwise.....why?

Seriously the only time that I ever turn it on is when I need to take a dump just so I can play some music. Cathdral's Ebony Tears is a great dump song.

lol! Why? Well for one you are aiding in cancer research. I am not telling you to fold@home . I can only suggest that you should. 1 hour a day wouldn't hurt plus you would be getting some extra dump time to listen to some Cathedral's Ebony Tears. Plus with this research, the life you save may very well be your own or someone you love. Just to put a little spin on it.

The only problem with saving lives is that you'll never know you did it.

That's not to say one should stop folding, though.

By all means, fold! I always leave my PS3 on for a couple hours when I go to bed while it downloads stuff from the store.

This is where the Folding@Home auto shut-off feature really comes in handy.

Let's make a list of pro's and con's

Pro's:
Nice Biological/DNA Analysis flash and a pinpoint look-alike map
You may have less serious disease in the future

Con's
Drains a unknown amount of power which you will end up paying alittle more then expected on your electrical bill
The University mentioned did not give any fact or proof stating their progression or previous developments being successful on the accepting page which looks like a scam to drain electrical power from your apartment/mansion/house

2/2 You decide.

The PS3 must be connected to the Internet to be able to send in the finished fold for the current project, then be able to download a new one to work on. That's the only reason why it needs to be connected.
