my ps3 recently broke, so i called sony repair and they said they will exchange my old 60gig ps3 for a new one, i never knew they swap ps3s or is this rare. but my main thing what about my hard drive should i take it out or not. because i got quite alot of stuff on their. thanks

Yeah they swap em or at least thats what they did with mine, there is not much you can do about your hard drive because if you put it into a new system it will reformat it and erase everything anyway so just keep it were it is.
You can still get the stuff you downloaded from the PS store back because its linked to your online account.
