It appears that the only type of PS3 out on the market now is the 40gb version. I also know they will be releasing an 80gb version with MGS4 in june or july. Is there anything the 40gb doesn't have compared to the 80gb? Does the 40 gb that is now available play ps2 games and have built in wireless?

I don't really care about MGS4, so should I just get a 40gb and think about upgrading the HD myself?

I should add that I really want a ps3, especially for GTAIV, but don't want to give up my old ps2 library or make any decisions I'll regret in a few months.

I don't ahve a huge library of ps2, but it would be nice to sell my old ps2 to help buy a ps3. Is there a website to check if a new ps3 system will play a certain game. I'm really just interested in the SSX games, shadow of the colossus, timesplitters, older GTAs, worms, and maybe a few others.

The 40 has always had Wi-Fi just like the 80 gig but it is missing the card readers and the PS2 backwards compatibility...If you can wait the MGS4 bundle is a good idea especially if your interested in the Dual Shock 3 because thats the only package so far with it in the box. June 12th isn't too far away.....I personally wouldn't have enough strength to avoid GTA for a month and a half though :)

The 40GB's dont have card reader slots, nor are they capable of backwards compatibility. I believe they can play PSone games, but they absolutely cannot play PS2 games. The 40gig version doesnt have the emotion engine (60GB) nor does it have the emulation software the 80GB version carries. There are plenty of 60GB and 80GB brand new or used on Ebay. Make sure to check the feedback score and read the description and details carefully before you buy. I've never had a problem Ebay and I have been a member for 5 years. As long as you read carefully, ask questions if you're unsure. The MGS4 Bundle releases the same time MGS4 game comes out which is June 12th. That bundle will be priced at $499.99 with the dualshock 3 controller instead of the six axis controller. Note: The Dualshock 3's are built with six axis too. Hope that helps.

They discontinued the 60 and 80 GB versions. If you do decide to settle for the 40GB version, you can upgrade the harddrive for more space. BUT, the 40 GB doesnt come with card reader slots.

To the last poster, I don't think any retailers in the US are selling any 80gb PS3 at the moment. I think the only new model available is the 40gb.

so if I can wait til June, the newest 80gb version will have ps2 compatability and the dualshock? I guess I'll have to wait because I'd really want the dualshock and want the ps2 compatability. I wish they had those features on the cheaper 40gb machine. I'd rather save the $100 difference and buy a huge HD to upgrade

so, what would be the chepest way to get a ps3 that plays ps2 games, has card readers? I can always just buy a dualshock separately, right? and I can just upgrade the HD if I want, right?

Yes, here is the website. I would probably recommend that you keep your PS2 and just get the 40GB version though because otherwise, you'd have to wait until the MGS4 bundle comes out to get a backwards compatible PS3 for a fair price. I just checked online, and 60GB/80GB PS3s are selling for $600 or more new, which is pretty ridiculous considering that the MGS4 bundle will be $500.
