Is it safe or have there been reports of it making ps3's crash or develop some ungodly problem that can only be fixed with an exchange for a new ps3.

Any one have a link that shows the contents of the update.

P.S. I have not updated my ps3 ever because last time my ps3 crashed and brokeded.

I have never heard of any instance other than yours that a ps3 breaks because of an update... but I do believe you need to update to play online at all... Maybe the reason it broke wasn't even the update, it could have been something else

Well when i updated to version 2.5(on last ps3), which Prince of persia required, My PS3 OS underwent a critical error and that red screen of death came up.

hmm... I think it might just have been that particular update, or your ps3's software was faulty. Either way, I'd say go ahead with the update, and if it breaks again, complain to Sony. That would probably be your best bet.
