Do I have to format the new HDD in Windows before I insert it into the PS3? Can the PS3 do the format by itself? Or do I have to format it in windows first? I understand it has to be FAT32, and the problem is FAT32 can't do partitions greater than 32GB so I'm going to need a LOT of partitions (mine is 320GB)! If I format it into 10 partitions, will the PS3 even see them all, or will it only see one partition and only 32GB out of the 320? After you restore your backups, will it restore EVERYTHING? Including all videos, demos, downloaded content, saves, game installs, DLC, memory cards, etc?

No the firmware will format it before install. I dont remember if the primary HDD is fat32 or ext format. Mine restored everything to my new hdd. I had a friend that did the same backup and restore procedures and his got fouled up somewhere and he had to reinstall most of his stuff.

Also, you can download a free utility that will format the whole HDD into one partition, but dont worry about it as the PS3 will do it for you as I said before.

Many guides say you have to format it yourself in Windows first. So you're saying I can just put in a brand new drive that is not formatted or partitioned at all, and the PS3 will recognize it and format it?

Yep, very simple. The PS3 will take care of the formating and such on its own.
