I'm interested in renting some games online, the info I saw didn't give me a good enough idea on how the system works...

How does the process generally work? Do you buy a membership and pay a certain amount per month?

Or do you just pay for what you get? And is there anykind of overdue fees in the fine print?

The only service like this I can think of is Gamefly, which I am a part of. Basically you pay a monthly fee ($17 for 1 game or $23 for 2) that is associated with a credit card (you must provide one to sign up), which will be charged on the same day of the month each month (ie: you subscribe on the 15th, you will be charged on the 15th of every month). You set up the games you want into a queue, which has ranks (1, 2, 3, etc) and typically gamefly tries to give you your number 1 choice and will sometimes drop farther down your list for the second game based on popularity of the game. They mail you the game in a sleeve and when you're done with it the sleeve reseals and can be sent back for free. Once they receive a game from you, they send you the next game on your queue (again, depending on availability). If you have a lot of time but not a lot of money, this can be useful. It's also a good idea for people who are very specific about the game they want because you don't have to drop $60 every time a game looks good. It's also a way to play the newest games for only about $20/month.

Gamefly also has a reduced price to purchase games you've rented. For example, I currently have Afro Samurai and if I want to pay $45, they'll send me the box and instructions and let me keep the game. As games become less popular or older, they get cheaper (each game has its own price). If you buy a game, they immediately send you a new game in your queue because you are no longer "renting" that game. Most games from Gamefly have been in great shape, too.
