Should the PS3 not be left on for too long at a time?

Is there a suggested amount of time they recommend turning the PS3 off in order to prolong it's lifespan?

It depends, if you really want to download something, keep your PS3 on for an extra hour or two but don't push your luck and keep it on all night, just to be on the safe side. But DON'T put it in the fridge like some idiots do lol

I've had mine on for 3 days at a time, and have had no problems. It sure did heat the room though. Running a PS3 for a year costs more than the cost of running a fridge, so I'm sure you don't want to keep it on too long as it will cost a significant amount.
